 The northern approach to Beirut from the air offers a wonderful vista on the Lebanese capital from above the city's western beaches. After a few minutes spent just off the coast of the north-south mountain range that forms Lebanon's backbone, the first view of the capital is of the Ras Beirut district, literally "Head of Beirut."
This neighborhood is one of the capital's commercial centers, having eclipsed Downtown Beirut during the 1975-90 civil war. Today it hosts a number of major universities, hotels, and shops and is the heart of this city's famous cosmopolitan character. American University of Beirut is the...

A large section of the art deco facade of this building in Center City fell to the sidewalk below. Luckily it happened at 5am when nobody was walking by. Formerly a fancy restaurant called Brassier Perrier, this building was supposed to be shown to a potential tenant later in the day. That potential tenant is said to now be looking elsewhere.
