Randomly passed this mermaid mural at Manhattan's South Street Seaport... for some reason, the mermaid isn't nearly as interesting as the fish with legs...

The 700 block of South Watts Street is an excellent representation of deindustralization and urban blight. What makes this block so unique, in addition to the entire stretch being abandoned, is its close proximity to Center City. Dozens of blocks identical to this one can be found in deep North Philly, Kensington, or West Philly. 700 South Watts, however, sits one block east of Broad Street (Avenue of the Arts) and is situated snuggly between tourist-saturated South Street and the heavily getrified Washington Avenue, an area home to yuppies and hipsters .
