Spring Migrations

- GGP - Wednesday, May 11th, 2005 : goo

Here is the story of how I found something I didn't know I was looking for: a place to celebrate place: citynoise.org.

Walking around my neighborhood taking pictures, I found these wonderful pieces of dualing street art.

Shortly thereafter, I came upon this.

And yes, still another.

The funny thing is, I'm into birding and with spring migration on in full force, I've started collecting images of birds in street art--they seemed to be cropping up everywhere, along with the real birds.

This lovely slate-colored flock was found on an engraved (marble?) stone in front of the old ASPCA building. On the other side of the stone, now partially sunken under layers of cement (ala Statue of Liberty/Planet of the Apes), is the original inscription/dedication. I imagine a very rich lady in an ample fur coat writing a big check to the ASPCA in honor of her maltese, Fifi.

Seeing all these things, finding these treasures just steps from my doorway makes me want to bring them to the attention of others who might enjoy and appreciate them. During these walks, I have been wishing I had a forum to share these images in some way, but I am not technologically engaged enough to put up a website of my own...I didn't yet know about citynoise.

Anyway, when I got home from the walk where I first encountered PET BIRD, I was jazzed and immediately googled PET BIRD and found citynoise. what a great discovery and what a joy to find a place of like-minded denizens with eyeballs firmly attached to brain and cam and heart. That's my tale of how the birds led me to citynoise. Special thanks to Peter for capturing PET BIRD and being a kind and friendly host. (This endorsement was not brought to you by any pharmaceutical company or by Swift Boat Veterans for "Truth")

what a fortuitous google, as was my own discovery of citynoise. now i am annoyed i didn't photograph the ducks for you today. i see them every day, but today they were being really weird, they were all sitting on the pathways and the lawns of the park sleeping. they must have had a really rough night, is all i can think. they weren't moving for anyone or his dog

and maybe in the spring the little pets get itchy wings as well...

poor china! lost s are very rarely retrieved, unfortunately. i have two birds myself, and am very vigilant to keep them in the house!

there is a big flock of cockatoos in west london, they are really famous, and because they are such a big gang the locals don't get to peck them to death or whatever, i have seen them, but they don't come over this way

here in bklyn, there are some "wild" parrots that escaped a truck or something years ago. they nest in the Greenwood Cemetery and at Brooklyn College. amazing they survive the winters here, but they do.

such a cool story of synchronicity - the gears of the universe matching up, or at least our small corner of it - and very good photos too.
