I live in Canada but visited Battery Park in New York City last year but never saw all these great monuments. Merchant Marine Memorial: 19th Oct 2006 - 19:33 GMT I don't know if Happy Grammie is still around, but the memorial is to the merchant marine -- the men of the shipping companies who ferried goods (and sometimes troops) to Britain during WW2, at great risk of German U-boat attacks.
