Monster Trucks

A couple of weekends ago, I wound up going to a monster truck show for the very first time. I had always considered such things to be the refuge of the redneck, so I had never gone before, but this was a group activity I was invited to with free tickets, and the family was interested, so off we went, to the Olympic Stadium.

As the pre-show gets underway, the trucks are parked along the wall of the stadium getting ready. Also note the jet-car (that was what it was called, although it looks like a bike to me). The jet-car made a lot of noise, but due to the fact that was inside a stadium, it had no room to get to speed. All we saw was a lot of flame shooting out the back.

The pre-show involved three snowmobiles doing jumps from a ramp over a schoolbus. The part I found interesting was how well they were able to control their snowmobiles while on dirt, since there was no snow. I have driven snowmobiles in the summer before, and they usually tend to turn poorly without snow.

Finally the monster trucks were underway. They started off with a series of jumping competitions. The truck in back with the American flag is one of the many monster trucks named Bigfoot.

During an intermission, we were entertained by the stunt driving done on this ATV. There were also smaller stunt ATV's doing the same jumps as the snowmobiles. One of the ATV's was racing back to get in position for another jump when he rolled over, and the driver wound up under his ATV, with the bike landing on his cheast. Surprisingly, the guy got back on and did his best jump yet, only 30 seconds later.

The driver of the Hot Tamale truck took the turn a little too fast, and rolled over. He had to be righted by an industrial forklift, but was back on the track soon enough, minus the roof.

The Avenger truck landed on one wheel after a jump, and the wheel broke off. Amazingly, he was still able to drive around with a wheel missing. Once the crew pulled the broken wheel off, the driver backed the truck into its parking spot as if nothing was wrong.

This truck landed pretty hard, took a few high bounces and wiped out. It did not come back.

The Hot Tamale truck was back out and doing jumps, when it got hung up on this cube truck. I thought for sure that was the end of the show for this one, but the driver was able to reverse it up over the cube truck and then make the jump correctly this time.

A minute later, Hot Tamale was jumping over the schoolbuses.

By the end of the show, the schoolbuses were getting pretty flattened.

There was also a human cannonball show at the end, but my batteries had died, so no picture.

All in all, I was pleasantly surprised to discover several things. First off, I had no clue that there were so many French-Canadian hillbillies. Most French Montrealers seem quite stylish, but there was little of that to be seen here. Secondly, I found that I quite enjoyed the day, and that I really do enjoy watching loud things crash and catch on fire. I learned to never judge something just because of the people associated with it. I guess if they come back, we will be going again, since it was a lot of fun.

eg: as a kid, growing up in tennessee, i went to more than my fair share of monster truck rallies and Tractor pulls... though i think my hearing was permanently damaged from all the indoor revving, it was always great fun.

curiously, i havent thought about these events in years, as its probably been 20 years since ive been to one, so your post definitely awakened some latent memories of home.

Yeah, it was heavily attended, too. Over 54,000 people were there, although you cannot see it because of the way I cropped the photos. The empty seats you see were the only empty seats in the house, because they were too close to the action to be deemed safe. You can see the line behind where people were allowed to sit in the 3rd pic.

I'm glad to have been able to give you a taste of something you missed, Peter. It's an honour.

I believe there were ten monster trucks in all. There are 10 trucks in my original of the first pic, but one was parked a bit away from the others, so I cropped it out in order to be able to see the other trucks better. Had I included the last truck, all the trucks would have been quite small in the pic.

My dad used to take me to monster truck rallies. I've been to one in Saint John and another in Moncton. One time a guy on a motorbike jumped over a helecopter with it's blades going. Had he not made the jump, there would have been a lot of traumatized kids that day.

Going to my first Monster Truck rally in Houston Saturday. Never hear of them unitl we came to Houston for the winter. Good pictures. Comments were also a help because it told of what was going on.

I hate to read these types of articles because of the stereotypes that get associated with the monster trucks. I am a 20 yr old man who is well educated and far from the hillbilly type and I love these machines. In the old days of monster trucks the drivers and crew were a bit rough but over the years - to drive and work on these machines you really need to have an engineering degree, hard work ethic, and be just a little nuts. Could anyone of you build a complete racing vehicle with 1500 horsepower from tubing and make it one of the safest racing vehicles in the world, doubt it. Trucks are designed on a computer for a few months to a year before the first tube is bent to shape. Parts are redesigned or fabricated to combat the pain for the drivers and to make parts stronger.

Research your topic before hand.

I never said that the drivers and crews were hillbillies et al. But like pro wrestlers or Jerry Springer, the mass audience has a tendency to be less sophisticated, on average. That is not to say that there are no cases of Nobel Laureates or heads of state that may very well enjoy monster trucks, wrestling or Jerry Springer. So far, I seem to like all but the wrestling, which I outgrew sometime in the 1980's.

If you bother to read the article you are criticizing in full before making your condemnations, you will discover that I am in fact communicating my experience of overcoming my preconceived prejudices to enjoy a good show. And as for my remarks about the hillbilly component of the audience, I have no control over that. All I am doing is telling you who was there. Why those particular people were in that particular place, that is for others to figure out.

If you do not like the description of who was there, what are we supposed to do? Ask the organizers to sell more tickets to business professionals? Sorry, that is not the reality I saw there on that day. And it was an excellent show, by the way.

i dunno; as far as "education" and "loving these machines" go, im in my 20s and an ivy-league grad and i think monster trucks are rad, so there. welcome to the club, "concerned monster fan". were not all hicks. and yes, in my experiences with monster truck rallies in tennessee, they certainly did appeal to a specific demographic... but that demographic included me at one point in my life. funny how that works, you know?

dont be so sensitive. just enjoy the trucks :D

Korean restaurant in N.D.G. on Sherbrooke by the corner of Clifton. Was closed when I was there, at 3 PM on a Thursday, which leads me to suspect they may be out of business.
