Chez Menick Le Barbier Des Sportifs
[previous] :: [next]I happened upon this place while biking around the northern section of the Plateau borough. It was the evening so I was unable to go inside to take pictures or speak to anyone but according to [[madeinmtl.com]], the barber shop is owned by an Italian named Dominique Perazzino (I'm not sure why he goes by Menick) who has become somewhat of a local celebrity for his story telling abilities. He has been an avid sports fan his whole life and was head of public relations for two Montreal junior teams. Apparently, in 1988, a television series was made based on the shop called Menick Receives but I can't find anything about it. According to the aforementioned website, Hulk Hogan (among other sports celebrities) had his hair cut here once. (My bicycle makes yet another Citynoise cameo!) The walls are completely covered in sports paraphernalia. The side with the mirrors and barber chairs tends to be more baseball oriented. The waiting area, and most of the rest of the shop is coloured entirely in red, white, and blue. Montreal is the perfect city for a sports themed barber shop as these three colours are both the colours of barber shops and the official colours of pretty much every professional sports team Montreal has ever had as well as the official colours of the 1976 Olympics.
The floor is a replica of the ice of a hockey rink which allows the red, white, and, blue theme to go even further. More about Menick and his barber shop (along with some neat audio from inside the shop and panoramic photos) can be found at www.madeinmtl.com/stops/180/2/ This article has been viewed 4456 times in the last 40 months laterallateral: 7th Aug 2007 - 11:24 GMTThis is awesome. I love the mini hockey stick... what are those, ashtrays? CE: 7th Aug 2007 - 14:57 GMTI didn't notice those before but they probably are ashtrays-relics of another time when Quebecers would smoke anywhere and everywhere with few exceptions (church often wasn't one of them). EvilGentleman: 7th Aug 2007 - 19:14 GMTI miss smoking on the school bus, although I used to hate it when the bullies would intimidate you into giving up half your smokes.
