The brick figures greatly remind me of Inuit , of which I have seen many in the Arctic.

wikipedia's article on the hits on many interesting points about the spit (aka ). it's a manmade breakwater and dumping site for land dredged from the harbour and construction landfill. the area was spontaneously adopted by hundreds of species of migratory birds and other animals, and has become a naturalized marsh at one end while still an active dumpsite at the other. the protection of this area and public access to it have been achieved by a grassroots citizen's advocacy group, www.friendsofthespit.ca.
