Snafu at the Former Plattsburgh Air Force Base

- EvilGentleman - Saturday, September 1st, 2007 : goo

Last weekend, my friend wanted to make sure the new repairs on his car were sound, so he decided to take it for a short test ride. So he and I went across the border to Plattsburgh, located about 45 minutes drive from Montreal in upstate New York.

After we ate at Ponderosa, we cruised around Plattsburgh a bit. The former USAF base there had been converted into an industrial park, so we checked it out. Lots of really cool old military buildings to take pictures of, although I forgot my regular camera, and had to use my cellcam.

Most of the streets on the base were named after states. Including this one, which was embarassingly misspelled. I may not live in America, but I know how to spell "Arkansas", and this was not it.

The only thing this leaves me to wonder, is who screwed this one up? Was this sign erected by the USAF, or is the Town of Plattsburgh the culprit? Either way, it is a shame to see such ignorance in a place that once housed Strategic Air Command B-52 nuclear bombers.

you've never heard of Arkanas? It's right between Missoui and Louisana....

EvilGentleman: 2nd Sep 2007 - 01:36 GMT

With Misisipi and Tenese on the east, and Teas and Olahoma on the west, right?

grange: Good one ...lol

CarbineM4: Is Arkanas anywhere near uranus?

Here's hoping this was a case of two people wanting to have the street named after their home states, so a happy medium was chosen.

I was stationed at Plattsbugh AFB from Jul 83 to Oct 86. To bad it had to close, it was a nice assignment.

I hear ya. I used to love watching the heavies and the swing-wings take off from Plattsburgh when we would be shopping there back when I was a kid. And as a former base brat myself, I can tell you, things are no better on the other side of the border. Here is a little of my personal history living on the airbases. While I was growing up, these were my father's postings:

1969 - 1971 CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia
1971 - 1973 CFB Sarcee (Calgary, Alberta) (Closed)
1973 - 1976 CFB Slemon Park (Summerside, Prince Edward Island) (Closed, now a Coast Guard SAR base)
1976 - 1980 CFB Curtis Park (Chatham, New Brunswick) (Closed, now a retirement village)
1980 - 1983 TCTI (Cornwall, Ontario) (Now Nav Canada Training Centre, with most of its training facilities stripped away)
1983 - 1989 CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia

As you can see, Greenwood is the only base still functioning, and even there, things have been scaled back. Definitely a shame, but that's life in the military world.

I was stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base, fron 1966 to 1970,best yers of my life. Was so sorry to hear it closed down, both my sons were born on base/My oldest son told me he went to visit the base, but it was gone. Why are we closing so many of our bases, are we letting our guard down?It kind of broke me heart,so many good memories and friends,I made during my duty.

Don USAF Retired: 28th Nov 2008 - 00:08 GMT

I was staioned at PBURG from june 1958 util may 1963 the real reason bases were closed was so x
congress could send the money to other countries as a free b. they colsed GEORGE air force base in CA and they could fly the desert 360 days a year.
