I was in the St. Lawrence Center mall in Massena, New York yesterday with an old friend of mine, and we wandered into this interesting shop called Memory Lane which features antiques, gifts and custom painting, focusing heavily on things that exemplify the country cottage style.
Sitting behind the counter was this huge sawblade, the exact size of which I forgot to ask, but I am guessing it was around 24 inches in diameter. I found the painting (which already has an owner, unfortunately) to be quite striking and unusual. I knew this would be the sort of thing for a good citynoise article, so I asked Karen Osoway, who is both the artist of this work and the shop owner, if it was ok if I photographed it for citynoise. She was quite happy to comply, so here it is. I am still not that great at indoor photos under fluorescent lighting, so I took one shot with flash, and one without.

first photo has it good. it is a nice scene. i wish i was fishing off those rocks now. i think ive been in memory lane. my wife says i live in memory lane but thats another story.

Karen is my mother and I just so happend to google her name and found your article. I really liked that piece and it seems so peaceful. Your pictures are so nice to find on line, it really makes me miss home.

Growing up in a rural town in New Brunswick, I saw all kinds of this stuff. My dad actually has a giant saw blade in his house with an image quite simular to this one except that it has a black background.

Your mother is a very nice and very talented lady. I only wish I could have taken better quality photos to do her work the justice it deserves. The store was quite interesting, as well. I am sure that my friend from Cornwall who I went there with has since returned with his wife, as she loves stuff like this.

Chris, I wonder if your dad also owns a Karen Osoway piece. You should check it for signatures, next time you go back to the Sussex area.

I live in Massena, and have been to Memory Lane. The artwork you picture is o.k. in my opinion... certainly not spectacular. Howver, there is a gentleman in the area who came up with this idea.... orginally. Since been "copied" by many people such as Karen Osoway. Memory Lane is not an exception in St. Lawrence Co. by far. Check out the Ashley House, The Craft Barn, The Mustard Tin. These store sell the same type of items at a MUCH better price, and the people that work in these stores are much nicer as well. :)

Hmmm, well I can hardly consider myself to be an expert on sawblasde art, so all I can recommend is to check out the store in the article, and the ones mentioned above, and decide for yourself. You may be right, you may be crazy, but it just might be a lunatic we're looking for... Ooops, sorry about that, listening to Billy Joel at the moment. The more we know, the better off we are. Any other opinions on St. Lawrence County custom painted objects? Let us know, people.
