Two Views of Tallahassee

The United States and it uncontrollable desire to become the strongest nation of the world, has grown in population all parts of the states, not knowing he damage that is being caused. It insane to just think about the development areas that are accuring. i live in miami, and every where i turn there is development plans growing . We just have to face the facts that one day all the citys are going to be just tall business buildings and everyone is going to be sufficated to death because we wont have any clean air to breathe.

my wife, a florida native, seems to recall the building- to the above right of the texaco sign- as being where she stayed in tallahassee during band camp, growing up. small world, huh?

i wish someone could get a today picture.. that would be awesome.. it hasnt changed all THAT much in the last 30 years though i think. i was there 2 years ago, and it looked similar to the 76 picture ifi recall correctly

Well I live in Tallahassee.I believe development in this city is desperately needed. The things that keep the city of Tallahasse going are it's 2 universities, and the fact that Tallahassee is Florida's capital. Any kind of private business could help this city really.They are finally trying to develop this city. 5-10 yrs from Tennessee street will look different from the 1954 and 76 pictures, and i can't wait.

Just a comment on the 1976 photo - pay attention to the spacing of the telephone poles - the photo inaccurately compresses the distances - some other-than-normal type lens. Compressing the scene exaggerates the differences.

Also - it appears that the 1954 photo is taken from a little west of the corner of Tennessee and Macomb, looking to the east. The view extends about one block.

The second photo may be from the center of that same intersection (witness the overhead traffic signal) - but the lense makes the view one of mearly three blocks (the "round hotel" in the the background, and the vertical changes in the road elevation help to gain perspective).

Comparing these two images unrealistically magnifies the degree of change.

You're absolutely correct about the visual compression--but I think the larger issue remains the same: the road widening, signage, etc. is just plain ugly. And I say this as someone who loves Tallahassee.

If more care had been given to the zoning, landscaping, sidewalks, sign dimensions and so forth when this stretch of Tennessee Street developed, the businesses would still be there, but it would be a much more pleasant place to both walk and drive. And the property values would likely be much higher!
