The Bridges of New York City

Thanks for the collection!

You are missing one, if you are meaning to include all bridges that connect boroughs: the railroad bridge just west of the Henry Hudson bridge that carries Amtrak, CSX, and Canadian Pacific trains from Manhattan to the Bronx, Westchester, and points north. Missing only one is a good job though! Most people would forget the Park Avenue Metro North bridge and/or the Hell Gate.

Also, I'm curious as to why the Tappan Zee, entirely outside city limits, belongs, and bridges like the Bayonne and Goethals, partially within the city, do not. It is pretty though.

Oh, and also the bridges that connect Brooklyn and Queens over Newtown Creek (and the one over Jamaica Bay to Rockaway), but if you were to include those, there may be not much justification beyond the political boundary thing to not include the dozens more bridges over the Bronx River, Gowanus Canal, Hutchinson River...

Mike: ahh the Spuyten Duyvil bridge! cant believe i forgot that. ill go add it to this entry ASAP. i used to row under it every day when i was in college.

re: the tappan zee... cause its a true hudson river bridge, as opposed to the bayone bridge, etc.

the reason why i didnt include the bayone or the other bridges you listted are because there are just too many. i did get some good incidental ones around the gowanus canal here though!

maybe ill do another entry of the other bridges. i jsut didnt want to make it too long here or it would take hours to load :)

Hours indeed! And there is always another one just around the corner to forget. I have a project going where I walk across every walkable bridge in the city and take a train or bus or taxi across every one I can't. It's quite a challenge.

Have you seen some of the bridges up in Bronx Park? There's a beautiful old high bridge just below the facility where you can rent a kayak. Also, the monorail in the zoo is certainly the only city bridge from which you can see rhino and Siberian tiger.

cool! i dont get up to the bronx much, unfortunately, but now that warmer weather is coming and i have a speedy bicycle at my disposal, i might make a go of it and get up there and shoot some flicks.

have you crossed the aqueduct over the harlem river? its amazing up there! unfortunatly, the one time i was there was by chance and i didnt have my camera. i must go again, and hope that the terrorism-phobia that has developed since my first trip doesnt prevent my access.

Peter, this is my favorite series of pictures on this site. Chicago is supposed to contain more moving bridges than any other city in the world. But, those bridges were - almost exclusively - designed and built by the same firm. In addition, almost all were made of the same material: iron, and almost every one of our bridges was/is painted black. We have many bridges, but little "bridge diversity," and that makes for monotony...

How about the little bridges over the Gowanus Canal. There's a really great sign on one of them about a ridiculously small fine you have to pay if you go too fast- I think it's maybe $7-$12. I love that bridge.

i don't think those photos of the brooklyn and manhattan bridges really do them justice. their beauty is far more impressive! i am really in love with the fair blue-and-white art nouveau vision that is the manhattan bridge.

Great bridge pics! Beautiful! I have a fear of bridges, yet I enjoy looking at them. I don't think I could ever drive across the massive bridges of NY........not sure I could even ride in the car while crossing them. While in SF, Ca the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate were hard for me.....as were some of the Mississippi river bridges. Anyway.....thanks for sharing. I LOVE New York, and hope to visit one day!

Someone asked about the High Bridge-It is closed currently, but residents of the Bronx neighborhood of Highbridge have apparently been campaigning to have the bridge reopened. The city very recently announced a plan to reopen the bridge after a reconstruction project. Pretty cool, since it is NYC's oldest bridge still standing!

Left NYC in 1953 the last trip back to NYC was in 2005. The only bridge I went over was Helgate. The family was supprised the I still rememberd the name.

Thats the Marine Bridge at Jamaica Bay at least that's what it was called in 1939,when you took the ferry from Sheepshead Bay to the point (Kennedys) and looked to the left there was the Marine Bridge.

oooooh my god every bridge in new york has it's own charisma.i am 13 and i love all bridges especially suspension ones and cable stayed bridges but new york bridges-paradise for me.i especially love the ones on the east river and hudson river.i love u new york! i've been to new york when i was 8 but then, i didn't gave much attention to bridges.i remember that i saw brooklyn b. manhattan b. williamsburgh b. and several others.

I brought my boat from upstate NY yesterday and was confronted with the Spyten Dyvil swing bridge in a closed position. There are no signs on the Hudson River side of the bridge with any information it is a swing bridge and it only opens at certin times and to get the operators attention you must call him on marine Ch.13.I post this for other boaters who might use this route to get into the East River. Call AMTRACK to be sure if and when it will open.

ch. 13 is pretty standard for such bridge communications. but beware that if you need the bridge to be opened, you need to contact them well in advance, as they have to work around the train schedules.

an easier tip, though, would be to check out the circle line schedule, and just go then, as the bridge opens several times a day, like clockwork, for the circle line tour boats to pass through. ive had good luck following them through on several occasions when i needed to get from the harlem river to the hudson under/through that bridge (yes, at low tide, small boats can fit underneath it)...

Hi from down under. On a recent trip to NY we took a boat ride around Manhattan and were very surprised to see a bridge similar to our famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. We were also surprised to learn that the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a copy of and was based on your Hell's Gate Bridge. Great photos.
