This article has been viewed 1509 times in the last 7 months Peter: 11th Jun 2008 - 05:27 GMTyes, its that time of year, once again, for bushwick hydrant posts.... jack: 11th Jun 2008 - 16:21 GMTnice shot, johnnie pumps were all the rage back in the 40's and 50's, the city would attach a hose and hang it on the fence at the schoolyard at boody jr. high on avenue s and west 4th street in brooklyn and all of us kids ran and played and cooled off there. it was fun but one day as the hose popped off a strong stream hit the street and a young girl got hit and was pushed across the street and got bruised up. and yes, we called the fire hydrants, "johnnie pumps". that's where the game called "Johnnie on a pony" came about and moved from the pump to a tree or wall. peter, the mermaid parade in coney is starting this month some time, gotta check the dates.
