Airport Security, My Ass!

Trudeau International Airport, Montreal

On Thursday, my wife had a can of 7up confiscated from her by airport security in Kuujjuaq, while preparing for boarding our return flight to Montreal. She asked if she could just drink it on the spot, but they said it was too late for that. While perhaps a bit of overkill, it makes sense in a way, since it has now been proven that explosives can be disguised as innocent liquids. I also made sure that my nail clippers were in my checked baggage, since we all know what a terrorist threat nail clippers can be. But then I remembered these pictures that I took two days earlier just before reaching Gate 17 at the airport in Montreal, well inside the "secure" zone.

Do you notice anything odd here, people? Remember, we have already cleared security way before this point, so anything we buy here can be carried on the plane without worry. This little rest stop was located 100 feet from the nearest airliner.

Just in case you missed it...

GLASS BOTTLES?

Why are nail clippers banned? Because they are sharp objects! What is a broken bottle called? An EXTREMELY sharp object! How stupid can people be?

I asked the lady working at the counter how this could be, and she said all the bottles had passed inspection. I'm sure they did, with all the apple and orange juice being just that. But the fact that the bottles are dangerous objects in and of themselves is ridiculous. I think people are forgetting their priorities here.

And to top it all off, an airport worker mentioned to me that the restaurants in the "secure" zones give regular sharp steel steak knives to the patrons who order steak or chicken meals. There is nobody checking that all these knives come back.

I have no problem with my fellow passengers carrying glass bottles and steak knives with them. My only question is, why the hell do we put up with all this "security" crap that does nothing but annoy people who own nail clippers, cigarette lighters, and cans of 7up?

a friend was allowed through with some "illegal" cosmetics because the security official thought "I'll let you keep this, because I know how expensive it is". Perhaps the terrorists should take note and put their explosives in a Dior container.

you could also kill the crew with the ecoli on the spinach leaves in that salad

EvilGentleman: 22nd Apr 2007 - 19:34 GMT

Or force-feed them Red Bull to the point that they are too jittery to fly the plane.

or just beat the hell out of them with your fists...

But EvilGentleman.... Red Bull gives you wings!

EvilGentleman: 23rd Apr 2007 - 13:51 GMT

I wouldn't know, indykid. I completely eschew energy drinks and all hot beverages, such as coffee, tea or hot chocolate. But give me enough Dr Pepper and all hell breaks loose.

funny but i went to a TSA rummage sale and bought a can of 7up for 10 cents. by the way my wife walked thru the check point and she passed and when we went to our room we found a knife in the bottom of her hand bag. true. but i know that we can get upset with overzealous inspectors, but remember we still may have sleeper cells in this country and it unnerves me that the day the WTC came down, the people in paterson new jersey were cheering the victorius taliban. we will never get back the secure feeling we had, it is gone forever but then again i thought the berlin wall was forever, things change.

EvilGentleman: 23rd Apr 2007 - 16:20 GMT

Actually jack, I generally agree on the need for incresed security. The lessons of 9/11 are not lost on me. What frustrates me though, is when we have very restrictive security for the average person, yet there are so many holes in other aspects of the security that the whole thing becomes a moot point. Security is a necessity that should be enforced all the way, and not half-assed, like what is being done here in Dorval.

It's sort of like what would happen if the police started getting serious about pulling over drunk drivers on the highway, but then they also open express lanes for the drunks on the side streets at the same time. Just does not make sense, in my book.

Three gates from the left end of this building:
