The Jets and the Sharks

this is it, the park, the beginning of west side story, snapping fingers, dancers trying to look and act like rough kids from hell's kitchen, the park has changed quite a bit, the old buildings are still down the street, the kids all grown, the park went from gangs to drug pushers to cute little kids again, thanks to rudy, this is between 9th and 10th avenues and 48th street or 49th street.

i went to the manhattan high school for printing on 49th street, they renewed the entire building in the 60's, here it is.

i walked these streets for many years, seen a lot of crazy things, but it always remained a neighborhood, church going people, old ladies praying, old men playing checkers. the old dames of hell's kitchen in the 50's and 60's are gone now, the x-gun molls, the girlfriends of gangsters of the 40's and 50's, strutting down the street protected by their man, strutting in high heels, nylon stockings, tight skirts, tight sweaters and a wide black belt around their thin waists, their hair blowing in the breeze, their perfumes, their blackened eyes, the looks and women of a bygone era.

i wish i was around in the good old days, not in this time when people are scared and say that they're tough.

jack:
I love west side story, and so do my students, todays jets and sharks, struggling for their own little piece of something out here in this new frontier, Bushwick.

I'd love to create a West Side Story fieldtrip for kids, so they could walk the same streets (currently under Fordham Law and Lincoln Center) that the jets and sharks strode.
