Food on a Stick

- Tyfoid Kid - Wednesday, August 30th, 2006 : goo

So the State Fair is big deal around here.
www.mnstatefair.org/
The fair still has most of the traditional fair stuff, farm animal judging, cow milking, some place to by that corn bin dryer. But for us city folks once we get tired of looking at the largest pig at the fair we want to eat some really shitty for your body junk food. And if it's on a stick that seems to be a bonus. This is tracked with great fervor, even making the evening news casts.

First we have the big 3 -

Chesse Curds
image 15090

Mini Donuts
image 15091

French Fries in a big (think large movie popcorn container) bucket.

image 15092

and some more traditional stuff for the old folks

image 15093

(I'm sure there's lutefisk somewhere as well, BLEAH.)

And on a Stick we have

Didn't try the ostrich
image 15079

More traditional but not very spicy (Uff Da Hot we call it.)
image 15080

The only way to eat a deep fried candy bar is on a stick

image 15081

Gator - tastes kinda like sausage

image 15082

This is just a corn dog
image 15083

Footlong hot dogs

image 15086

Walleye is a very big deal here so it has to be attempted.
image 15084

Hot Sub Sandwhich - on a stick
image 15085

Not too hard to figure this one out
image 15087

Scotch Eggs - wasn't it Mike Meyers who said that most Scottish food was the result of a dare.
image 15089

and the hot new comer for this year and the one gets the most comments

Nice collection of eateries. Do you have any pictures of the largest pig?

EvilGentleman: 31st Aug 2006 - 00:24 GMT

Yeah! We want pig pix! Pig pix! Pig pix! (On a stick, if you could be so kind)

Tyfoid Kid: 31st Aug 2006 - 16:15 GMT

I'm hoping to head over again tonight. Hopefully they haven't packed all the animals up yet.

joey: 1st Sep 2006 - 01:48 GMT

i didn't see any venues with deep fried twinkies. just candy bars. oh yeah, we have them in california.

Susannah: 1st Sep 2006 - 02:27 GMT

How on earth do they get hot dish on a stick? What on earth is Hot Dago?

Selig: great series.

Tyfoid Kid: 5th Sep 2006 - 13:27 GMT

Hot Dish on a Stick is Meatballs and Tator Tots, the main components (along with cream of mushroom soup) in Tator Tot Hotdish. I've heard it's less then stellar.

Evil G. I went back to the fair and the pig barn was cleared out. I have a pic of the largest pig from a few years ago, I just have to find it.

EvilGentleman: 5th Sep 2006 - 13:57 GMT

But I wanted to see the biggest pig from this year - on a stick.

Susannah: 5th Sep 2006 - 21:46 GMT

I bet they don't have shark fin on a stick .;}

Susannah, it's your turn now. I'm afraid of the citynoise servers banning me for being a possible spambot.

susannah: 6th Sep 2006 - 00:38 GMT

I searched the web for shrunken monkey heads on a stick - but this will have to do-

I wonder how long before we see spaghetti-on-a-stick... or maybe soup on a stick, chili on a stick, caviar on a stick, salad on a stick, or perhaps deep-fried sneakers on a stick.

I know - BEER on a stick, now THAT is a winning recipe...

Susannah: 6th Sep 2006 - 12:59 GMT

stayed tuned for grits on a stick, biscuits and gravy on a stick, scrambled eggs on a stick,alka-seltzer, tums and rolaids on a stick:-)

Teo: 13th Sep 2006 - 21:19 GMT

We made a Video of all the many foods on a stick at the Minnesota State Fair.
Check it out at: http://bellydujour.com/2006/09/video_on_a_stick.php

Spam on a stick? Eggs, bacon, spam, spam and spam on a stick.

Jon: 14th Oct 2006 - 16:24 GMT

spaghetti-on-a-stick? the future is a couple years ago!

Travis: 15th Jan 2008 - 15:56 GMT

I was there at the mn vstate fair and ate a deep fried candy bar

Jack Vermicelli: 1st Sep 2008 - 06:30 GMT

What is "hot dish"? Sounds so generic- there are many dishes served hot. Way to be specific, Minnesota.

zagg: 2nd Sep 2008 - 15:42 GMT

This place is missing a good falafel stand, what the hell!?

Railyard Botanicals

The Atlantic Avenue railyards are bristling with botanical life at the moment. Here are some samples of what's growing over there. We begin with some Queen Anne's Lace. (I think.) Thistle. Goldenrod. Unknown. A couple of blocks away, across the street from the unsafe safe,...
