The World's Largest Open Prison
[previous] :: [next]Here are a selection of images from his recent trip to the Palestinian territories, where he has created nine of his images on Israel's highly controversial 425-mile-long West Bank barrier. Separating Israel from the Palestinian territories, is considered illegal by the United Nations. One of the pictures shows two gleeful children with bucket and spade standing beneath a hole in the wall that opens on to a vista of a tropical paradise. In another, he has transformed the wall into a cosy sitting room complete with two enormous armchairs and a window that frames an alpine landscape.
Other pictures show a little boy kneeling at the foot of a rope ladder that snakes to the top of the wall and the silhouette of a girl rising through the air clutching balloons. An old Palestinian man said his painting made the wall look beautiful. Banksy thanked him, only to be told: "We don't want it to be beautiful, we hate this wall. Go home." images used without permission from: channel4.com/news/gallery/2005/banksy/ text paraphrased from: www.guardian.co.uk/arts/news/story/0,11711,1543171,00.html This article has been viewed 6032 times in the last 3 years hool: 10th Nov 2005 - 15:25 GMTi would tend to agree with the old man. a clever juxtaposition for banksy to enjoy, a shitty reminder for those whose lives are contained by that wall. Peter: 10th Nov 2005 - 15:36 GMTthis reminds me of all the graf- political, profound and otherwise- that covered the berlin wall... this wall is so similar, in many ways... physically and metaphysically. elaine: 10th Nov 2005 - 15:58 GMTi do too, it seems unremittingly frivilous. if he had just done the one with the balloons that would have been better, alone it would have had a little poignancy Jamie: 10th Nov 2005 - 17:07 GMTi agree. i only saw the one with the baloons on tv. it seems fitting in a way the other so totally don't. i suppose in a way the little girl being carried over the wall could symbolise hope for the people of palestine. hope executed in non-violence. the others seem to me to almost tease or poke fun at the captive population. i duno, perhaps the artist was just caught up in the excitement of what he was doing. or what he thought he was doing. or more probably where he was doing it. pip + bubs: 24th Mar 2006 - 19:35 GMTbanksy is our idol he is the man he is very creative and innovative he is the fucking don of the street anon (165.84.1.71): 23rd Aug 2007 - 01:16 GMTBanksy is the shit! The puppet masters will want to squash this kind of expression but they forget they bombard us with their crap non-stop, theres no escape! Go hard brotha tom: 23rd Aug 2007 - 02:02 GMTDoes this wall go all around the West Bank? I thought it was just between Israel and the West Bank. Does it go along the Jordanian border as well? Are the Palestinians totally surrounded, like the West Berliners were? That's awful. Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
