Babelfishing
[previous] :: [next]This was originally going to be a comment in A Grisly Example of Man's Inhumanity, but it became so long, and so off-topic, that I decided to start a new thread. Babelfishing is the mental sport of trying to decipher the gibberish that can come out when you use babelfish (world.altavista.com/tr Ok, babelfishing of sentence commencing... 1 - Original English version: 2 - Now to Japanese:(see comments below) 3 - Back to English: 4 - Now to Dutch: 5 - Back to English: 6 - How about Russian? (See comments below) 7 - English again: 8 - To French: 9 - Let's translate the French directly to German now: 10 - Now back to English: 11 - Now to Korean: (See comments below) 12 - English again: 13 - Last time, to Greek now: (See comments below) 14 - And the final result in English is: There! I think that makes things pretty clear... This article has been viewed 3481 times in the last 2 years EvilGentleman: 16th Apr 2006 - 04:58 GMTI noticed that non-Latin alphabet characters seem to cause problems with the formatting for the main posts, but since I have seen them in the comments area without too much trouble, I hope this will be visible in the proper alphabets. Here are the parts I could not show you above. 2 - Now to Japanese: 6 - How about Russian? 11 - Now to Korean: 13 - Last time, to Greek now: Elicar: 16th Apr 2006 - 05:20 GMTHow about the simple phrase, I love you To French To Portuguese Back to French To Italian Back to English Hah? I think I'll use sign language. EvilG...Don't you have a homework to do? EvilGentleman: 16th Apr 2006 - 05:33 GMTLMAO... Just waiting for my exams to begin in a week. I can just picture some poor schmoe from some remote corner of the globe meeting his new love, who he met over the internet, for the very first time. There he is, holding her hands in front of him, the candlelight reflecting the joy in their slightly misty eyes, and he says, in his most romantic voice, "Of the taste". I can then imagine his date staring for a moment, then saying she needs the washroom, and off she goes, never to return. EvilGentleman: 16th Apr 2006 - 05:53 GMTTry babelfishing "I love you." from English to Japanese to English to Korean to English to Italian to French to German to English to French to Portuguese to French to Italian to French to Greek to English to Chinese Traditional to English. I think you will find the answer simple and to the point, but I have no clue how to say it. hool: 16th Apr 2006 - 16:35 GMTi'm going to delete this article and re-post it in the comments of the respective article. from http://citynoise.org/about: Starting a new thread to comment on an existing one is discouraged, and unless it stands on its own, it will be deleted. this article does not stand on its own, in any way. jeeff: 16th Apr 2006 - 17:00 GMTi agree. this site isn't just a chat board. try to keep your audience in mind. if i were to draw a thesis from the above post, it would be: "internet translation doesn't work very well." what does that have to do with the themes of urban/rural environment & culture that we see on citynoise? EvilGentleman: 16th Apr 2006 - 19:22 GMTAw darn. Sorry guys. Live and learn, you know? I'm kinda stuck somewhere in between regular poster and newbie here. Give me time, I'll shape up. I honestly thought it would clutter up the other post too much, and it is sort of a continuation of a discussion elaine and I were having in the bong buffet article. I thought it might have a life, but if you say it does not, I cannot honestly think of any way I can say you are wrong. I will try my best to keep this boundary in mind when posting in the future. I will get a better feel of things soon enough, I hope. EvilGentleman: 16th Apr 2006 - 19:49 GMTAnd as far as reposting the comments goes, no need. Just delete the whole article, and never mind reposting, unless you really want to. I think the few people that would have found this funny have seen it, so its purpose is done. hool: 16th Apr 2006 - 20:09 GMTno need to be sorry. nobody was offended. i'll leave this up a while longer because it will help to make everyone aware of the guidelines for contributions. i understand that most new people will likely not search out the editorial policy before contributing an article. EvilGentleman: 16th Apr 2006 - 20:30 GMTLOL, that is the ironic part. I have read the editorial policies, but I obviously misinterpreted the meaning of "stands on its own". It may take me a while to get a better feel of things. By the way, were you in Montreal yesterday? anon: 17th Apr 2006 - 19:39 GMTCould language not be considered as a commment on culture. As in cultural misinterpretations... honestly I found this to amusing! but I'm a rare bird. hool: 17th Apr 2006 - 21:00 GMTanon: anything can relate to anything with enough abstraction. evilg: no, but i'll be in montreal at the beginning of june for a week or more. i'm looking forward to doing more photo work there. vz: 17th Apr 2006 - 21:58 GMTThe cover for sale (Pen Cap for Sale) Jamie: This of with: -) EvilGentleman: 28th Apr 2006 - 19:36 GMTOk, this is just bizarre. This page, which I agree is out of accepted bounds for citynoise due to being excessively off-topic and frivolous, has gotten more hits than 33 of the 37 articles I have posted so far this month, including all my graf walk pics, and even my addition to the graf trux series. Maybe time has more to do with it than anything else. I gotta stop looking at the counter numbers once in a while, and just read the comments instead. Elicar: 28th Apr 2006 - 21:56 GMTI don't think it's bizzare EvilG. Hool has this following like a cult (I meant that in a good way, Hool), so, when he disagreed, everyone was intrigued. When Jeeff agreed with him, now they are mystfied! ;) I think what happened in your graf series is, there is just too much!!!!! I personally got tired looking at them. If you had paced it as what the editor/s have suggested, there maybe more hits. And, if you are open to a constructive feedback, my impression was, the focus was quantity, not quality. There were several graf's that I thought would have been better appreciated if it was a close-up shot, or on its own. And there were shots that took away the interest from the interesting ones, because they were not interesting. But then again, I am not really a graf lover, so take that with a grain of salt. Now, be kind with your repartee.
EvilGentleman: 28th Apr 2006 - 22:46 GMTI agree that maybe I have posted too much at once, but I sort of felt pressed, as I had a backlog of graf shots building up. I was taking too many at a time. I still have about another 30 or 40 shots to go, in fact. I wanted to heed the advice about pacing myself, but I knew how much I had. I had also considered not posting a lot of them (I actually weeded out about 100 or so), but I do not know graf real well, and I was unsure if there might be some innocuous-looking piece that turns out to be the work of someone's favourite graf artist, so I posted a lot of stuff that I, too consider to be iffy. Once I have a better feel for what people want to see, I will be better able to sort out the wheat from the chaff. I notice you seem to be pretty good at picking things out, but I suspect you have training or experience of some sort. And then on top of it all, I have a tendency to lean towards comprehensive posts, which can be both a blessing and a curse. I have noticed that when I include comments or descriptions along with the pics, people seem to like it better. This whole experience is very educational. But then again, some of my fave posts on citynoise by other authors seem to be very lightly viewed. I think what I have to do is to stop caring if my posts are popular or not, and just continue developing my own styles. Things will fall into place eventually, no need to rush it. Elicar: 28th Apr 2006 - 22:55 GMTLast two sentences, I could have not said better! No EvilG, I don't have any training. However, I like all things of beauty. I post what I like to be appreciated by like-minded people. I do like majority of your posts. I haven't gotten over the arctic sceneries. We all experiment, perhaps immitate, but eventually, what comes out is the real us! EvilGentleman: 29th Apr 2006 - 01:58 GMTI like the way your mind works, Elicar. I like it very much. :-) EvilGentleman: 29th Apr 2006 - 02:17 GMTSay Elicar, where did your O Canada post go? I have never seen a post that busy suddenly disappear before... EvilGentleman: 29th Apr 2006 - 02:23 GMThool: when you come to Montreal in June, email me so we can hook up for a bite to eat or something. Peter has my hotmail addy if you don't already have it. My treat. And I want to take a shot over your shoulder of your hand holding your camera as you take a pic, I think it would go well in the "photographs of photagraphers" thread. But only if you consent to the shot. Elicar: 29th Apr 2006 - 02:37 GMTEvilG, I like how my mind works too, but it gets me in trouble sometimes. I am sure yours too! ;) Editors, I just forwarded you an email that I sent Peter. It seems Peter has not been online. Can you please check it out (urgently, if possible) and respond to my query please?
EvilGentleman: 29th Apr 2006 - 02:51 GMTNo comment, re: trouble. If you could only see my evil grin, you would run away screaming (or laughing). I know my wife would laugh, cuz she knows me so well. Elicar: 29th Apr 2006 - 03:10 GMTIf I read you well, you like to challenge the limits, stretch the boundaries, see how far you can go. Sometimes, your temperament gets the better of you, but you have a good heart and you always mean well. Am I right or am I right? (You have to remember, by virtue of my gender, I am always right!) EvilGentleman: 29th Apr 2006 - 15:49 GMTIt is extremely rare for a heterosexual male to use a demure smile and to remain silent, but I feel this to be the most appropriate response here. And the stuff in brackets applies to us arrogant, pigheaded menfolk as well. ;-)
EvilGentleman: 29th Apr 2006 - 16:42 GMTNaaaah, silence means I can't be bothered to go into a lengthy explanation of my character, combined with a desire to not appear too egotistical about my greatness, stunning good looks, superior intellect, amazing charm, great sense of humour, and really pleasant-smelling old sweatsocks. Oh, did I mention modest? Modesty is one of my greatest assets. In fact my modest makes better than everone else, eclipsed only by my wonderful humility. Hmmm, I may have just let the cat out of the bag. Ooops... I may have also just nauseated myself. The things I do for humour... Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
