every neighbourhood has its eyesores, and i guess you could say our house is one of them. it's a great old place with lots of "potential", but it's also an old rental property in need of much TLC. our next door neighbour, an old guy called victor, spends all day tending his immaculate vegetable plot out front. sometimes he gazes stonily at our weed-patch. i kind of like the weeds - stomping through them reminds me of being out in a country field. but a couple of days ago some mystery-benefactor mowed them.

now another neighbourhood eyesore seems to be going the way of the dinosaurs. past victor there's another gardener, always shirtless, with a long line tattooed up his spine. kind of a hippy i guess. at the back of his property is a severely dilapidated garage/rabbit hutch. probably not safe to enter.

on friday the gardener and his wife had people over. they all stood and chatted in the yard- a very civilized party. the next day i walked by and saw this:

i guess it was a "goodbye garage" party. but now that they've decorated it, it seems a shame to tear it down.

fascinating! I see so much green, too. geez, i really need to check out toronto sometime.

GGP: 26th Jul 2005 - 17:22 GMT

don't let them mow your lawn against your will, Jeeff!
"a mowed lawn is an ecological wasteland"--butterflies, bees, and other pollinators love "weeds"

whatever happens lawnwise if your life, i love these shots, this ambiance.

BTW, my partner & I are getting a puppy soon and we seriously considered naming him JEEFF! we think your name is cool.

MoeRex: 26th Jul 2005 - 17:27 GMT

I spent some time in the Toronto area many years ago...and having said that, I would never have guessed that this was shot there. Looks more like something you'd see in someplace like Louisiana....

Love the high-rise building sketches on the garage door.

piranha erem: hippies are always weird, man.

jeeff: 26th Jul 2005 - 18:34 GMT

peter - you should. i'd love to return the favour of showing your around my town.

ggp - a puppy namesake! that would be so cool. my name would live on... ;)

moe - i think the part of toronto that visitors see is usually limited to the downtown core, which is more concrete-y than the downtown residential areas that ring it. on weekends the downtown core is pretty much tourist-land. most locals hang out beyond that in our leafy jungle. every year the profusion of plants does amaze me a bit.

Peter: 26th Jul 2005 - 18:41 GMT

jeeff: we were talking this weekend about making a roadtrip up there, now that we have a car that could actually make the trip without dying... so yeah! def before winter :)

MoeRex: 27th Jul 2005 - 04:27 GMT

jeef: Yeah, I remember the countryside there pretty well, and the summer green. I spent a summer there while my family was living in the relatively posh environs of Oakville (they were there for a year; I was attending UC Santa Cruz and had to return in the fall). I recall that I especially enjoyed my late night sojourns down the long county roads that lace between the various towns and suburbs that make up the greater TO metro area; it was a nice way to end a night's entertainment. just me in my car, driving down shadowy tree-lined lanes seemingly in the midst of nowhere, and CIUT blasting an odd blend of hip-hop, calypso, and punk from the stereo....

jeeff: 27th Jul 2005 - 04:50 GMT

peter - keep me posted.

moe - yeah, oakville's a whooole different story. i went to college in oakville... i bet you could eat off the sidewalks there. there are def some nice spots to cruise around once you're outside of toronto proper. i hate driving within the city though. the main reason i've let my drivers license lapse.
