Blvd Decarie, Ville Saint-Laurent

Welcome to my new neighbourhood. This is blvd Decarie in the old section of the borough of Ville Saint-Laurent. Decarie is actually much more than what I'm going to show here but this section of the boulevard is more or less the "downtown" of the borough. Below the area in the first picture, the Autoroute Decarie begins which is a below grade highway that cuts right through the original street. Blvd Decarie now runs on either side of the autoroute with mixed results.
We begin near where the autoroute ends and the old section of Ville Saint-Laurent begins. This is an area that Jane Jacobs would have described as a "border vacuum" as it is pretty much where the neighbourhood is cut off by something that is of no appeal to pedestrians. Because of this, this area of the street receives little pedesrian traffic other than people walking to their houses or switching busses outside the metro stop.

Most of the side streets off Decarie are quiet with 2 or 3 story duplexes or multi-apartment buildings:

Ending the commercial area of the street is a large fruit stand and grocery store. I haven't strolled any further but it seems to turn back into a residential street after this. Norgate Shopping Centre, on the other side of the street, gets it's own post.
There is a large revitalization project slated for the boulevard. It was supposed to already be underway but I can't find any evidence of it other than upgrades to a parking lot on an adjacent street. I'm going to visit the borough office tomorrow and I'll get more information on it (there is an excellent .pdf file that outlines it all but I can't seem to find it).

the spiral staircases are cool, really great style. also love the photo of the building with the bite taken out of it, can't see the rest, the images won't load for me.

I felt the same way when Marlo started posting from Fredericton.
I like wandering around and recognizing something only to remember that I had seen it from one of your posts. It's a weird feeling to be somewhere I've never been in my life and recognize it. It also helps beat a bit of the culture shock I'm currently experiencing.

finally found the Revitalization plan. It's being delayed because they're starting phase 2 (the parking lot) first and there are a lot of concerns (many of which I don't agree with) from the store owners.

I grew up many years ago in St. Laurent on St. Aubin Street. Went to St. Laurent High, hung out at Goyer (sp?) Park and Beaudet. Sure looks different!!!!

I was looking at the pictures and it brings me nice memories I lived in St Laurent until december 7 2007, and I miss it a lot. I cant wait to walk in those streets. thanks for sharing this photos.
