 Leftover from an age before motor vehicles. A time when streets didn't need to be of any specific width. Peculiar alleyways. I think i have sen this particular alleayway in a painting named Tinker's Alley, although the street sign describes it as Lindsey Court.
The cobbled area now adjacent to the town library is where the locally famous executuioner William Marwood once practiced his gruesome trade. It was perhaps more of a morbid hobby however, as he had a day job as a shoemaker. There is an old house on church lane which bears a plaque claiming itself to be his...

 i love the word cleave. it's a double entendre, you know. it has two meanings which are the opposite of each other, it cam mean cut in two, or join up. this tree looks like it is two trees smooching, but it is just one looking like two
