Originally opened in 1923, the South Street Bridge is one of several bridges that connects Center City with West Philly. Known for its spectacular view of the city and its pedestrian-friendly character, the South Street Bridge is a favorite among locals. In the past decade however the bridge has begun showing its age...large chunks of concrete have fallen off over the years, several of which have landed on the I-76 highway located underneath on the far west end (a safety hazard although thankfully no one has been injured). An untold number of pieces have also crumbled into the Schuylkill River...

These photos were taken in the West Philadelphia area between 36th and 42nd Streets, from Chestnut Street south and Spring Garden to the north. This fringe area is where University City (comprised of both the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University) meets the blue-collar Poweltown Village and the hyperghetto of Belmont.

Random paste-up in Center City. The one on the right is pretty funny, but the one on the left seemed to make passersby alittle uncomfortable. My guess is someone came across the rambling text of a person with a mental disorder, photocopied their words, and decided to paste. These are not my words by the way - I also find them offensive. But I still think they're worth sharing.
