Hidden City Philadelphia is going all through the month of June, allowing access to some great hidden treasures in the city, including historic tours, art installations, and performances. The first stop for me was Founders Hall at Girard College. These photos are from the rarely seen Archives, as well as some of the empty classrooms which were abandoned because the acoustics were deafening.
So says Wikipedia - "Girard College is a private philanthropic boarding school on a 43 acre (170,000 m2) campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States. The school is for...

A large section of the art deco facade of this building in Center City fell to the sidewalk below. Luckily it happened at 5am when nobody was walking by. Formerly a fancy restaurant called Brassier Perrier, this building was supposed to be shown to a potential tenant later in the day. That potential tenant is said to now be looking elsewhere.

The Zimmerman Slaughterhouse and Meat Packing Building, located at 4th & Fairmount in Northern Liberties, has several terra-cotta steer heads adorning the top of it. At the time that it opened in 1911, the Zimmerman ranches were bringing over 40,000 cattle to market each year. Think Upton Sinclar's "The Jungle". Several years ago it was converted to condos.

Thousands of people from across the city and region came out to the 3rd Annual Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby on the afternoon of Saturday, May 16, 2009. The sculpture derby, an economic development initiative of the New Kensington Community Development Corporation, showcases local artists and businesses in the Fishtown and Kensington neighborhoods, while at the same time promoting sustainability. Participants maneuver their human-powered vehicles through a three-mile urban obstacle course, ending with a giant mud pit at the finish line!...

The Ride of Silence is a slow-paced (12 mph or less) silent bike ride through the city to honor those who have been killed in bike-related accidents in the past year. Luckily in Philly we only had one fatality to mourn (6 others in South Jersey). The goal is to raise awareness about bike safety and to educate motorists, so that eventually cities won't have to host these rides.

This ghost still stands at 54th & Wynnefield Ave. Originally opened in 1928 during the golden age of cinema, the Wynne Theatre was an entertainment spot for Wynnefield residents until its closing in 1955 (later reincarnated as a catering hall and bingo hall until the 1970's). The original signage from the roaring 20's reminds neighbors of a forgotten era.
