The Bright Lights of Astoria

author: Catherine Penfold-Waxman : Queens, NY

Last night, the rain made everything glisten, like a Queens girl's lipgloss. The Astoria merchants have spared no expense with their holiday lights. In New York it's common to have christmas lights (fairy lights to the Brits) wrapped around trees all year round. The effect is better during the winter, and it's very lovely to see the tree lit up (right...plastic, electricity and nature in perfect harmony). These lights are around a bunch of long-suffering trees outside Omonia Cafe on Broadway. This tree appears to be sporting ankle socks of light, as some of the bulbs have gone.

Northern Blvd.

Northern Boulevard in Astoria is rife with car dealerships. These are a couple of interesting shots that Mitch Waxman, my beloved, took while out for a stroll in the 'hood. You could get all political with this one. But it isn't America repressing the Earth, it's merely a dealership patriotically keeping the 34th street 4ever gang from stealing cars. The Empire State Building lurks in the background. The Chrysler is trying to get in the picture too.

It's no picnic being a bear on the mean streets of Astoria, Queens. One minute you're in the loving embrace of a child, the next, you're nailed to a tree. Down and out with nothing but a Halloween candy bag.
