I take the 1 train south, from 110th street to 72nd street, where i catch the cross-town bus, which drops me off right smack in front of my office. Unfortunately, things weren't that simple this morning.
The doors on the car that I was riding in were having a problem. Any veteran strap-hanger knows such stories... the bells ding-dong, and the doors repeatedly open and close while the conductor yells at the passengers to "move all the way into the car and stand clear of the doors". According to Chinese legend, the twelve animals represented in the Chinese zodiac once quarreled over who would be the lead animal in representing the annual lunar year cycle. The ancient gods were consulted, and decided to hold a contest t odetermine the winner: the animals were to swim the widest breadth of the river; whomever reached the opposite bank first would be chosen,the rest of the animals receiving their reprasentative years according to the order in which they finished.
