this is an old restaurant, it was owned by a women who had a sign posted outside saying, 'we do not like men, but you can come inside,' yes, it was a lesbian hangout in the 40's called, 'swing rendezvous', then it became the, 'underground', in 1967 with it's psychedelic lighting, where i once had a scotch with friends. the restaurant is ground level and the club is in the celler. now it's the comedy celler where jon stewart and jerry seinfeld performed, but watch out, the bathrooms are in the club and you have to pass in front...

in the northwest corner of washington square park can be found the one of the oldest trees in manhattan. the area was used as a graveyard for slaves and yellow fever victims, a dueling ground and a place of execution. in 1824, supposedly, the marquis de lafayette witnessed the hanging of 20 highwaymen. the last person hung here was rose butler in 1820 for arson.

my daughter caught this shot of the arch christmas tree and a glimpse of the empire state from washington square park. some man walked into the scene, must be a wannabee character actor. the old coot! anyway she wanted me to take a pic of the old hanging tree which i will post next. and i retook the mural by the groove so you all can see how big it is. by the way that is the beginning of 5th avenue behind the tree.

garibaldi, what he is doing in washington square park i'll never know. but behind his statue, under the building canopy, at left, is the very same building that the triangle shirtwaist factory fire occured in. the women, mostly irish and italian immigrants, locked up in a factory room near their sewing machines, jumped out of the ninth floor window to the corner pavement below. NYU occupies the buildings now.
