Its hard to believe this is the first post on citynoise about governor's island.
It is one of my favorite spaces in the city, so close to all but with such a distant feel.
It was only opened to the public in 2003, after 300 and some of years of military use.
Those three centuries have left their mark on the landscape. While the rest of the city was shaped with the interest of accomodating teeming masses...
...Governor's Island was all about triangulation, clear lines of fire, and billetting troops to protect the city in time of war--as well...

My friend came into town yesterday for her birthday. We first walked over to Carl Schurz park to watch to boats in the East River
We went to the Seaport and took a boat ride right before a thunderstorm blew in. The sky was half dark and half blue. It was incredible. I wasn't fast enough to catch a shot of the lightning...
These cranes are in Brooklyn
The Brooklyn Bridge
The Manhattan Bridge
Right when we pulled in, it started to rain. Then pour. We had lunch and waited it out. When ithe skies cleared, they were brilliantly blue.

But really, I wanted to see the city without so many damn people.
The romance is not evident in these...

This is the building that originally sparked my love for loft warehouses. Since 1988, I've lusted to live in this building in the Chelsea part of New York City. As of 2001 (the last time I saw anything available in this building), the ginormous spaces were renting for less than $1 a square foot. Not zoned for living, though... heh. more here
I also spotted this 1965 Chevy El Camino parked out front... I had to work fast to snag this shot,...
