HPD? Who’s that?
No, Bushwick watchers, that’s no simple tag to be found on Bushwick Ave between Melrose and Noll Streets.
That is the mark of the Dept. of Housing Preservation, and Development
That shuttered row of buildings on the east side of the street is an example of urban renewal in action—the process of eminent domain.
design plan from "Transforming the Landscape", courtesy HPD
Within the scope of the design plan above, this will be a park plaza. This is part of the Rheingold Rennaisance Development to the North, and part of the West Bushwick Urban Renewal Area.
In this long struggling...

And the kids of Brooklyn know it!
The FDNY may have a point. This is wasteful, dangerous, and not so safe.
But its a declaration of summer, plain, simple, and wet.
Teachers just do it with a different kind of drink.

In Brooklyn's cemetery belt, you'll find acres of marble.
But not here, at its Bushwick end.
Most Holy Trinity Cemetery was designed for the use of Tin grave markers.
Apparently, the ground was too soft to handle the weight of marble and granite.
There are some simple wood alternative tombstones, too.
I don't know if this situation is unique, but it is haunting.
See it for yourself:

After months of postings, you can come and see the real deal, down at the Brooklyn Historical Society.
I would invite anyone who sees the show online at [[www.upfromflames.com]] or at the BHS [[www.brooklynhistory.org]] to post your responses, ideas, opinions here.
There's more to come from Bushwick!

I've been looking for Huitlacoche for a year or so, determined to find it and eventually give it a try...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_smut
So I found some at my local bodega... a single can with a bit of rust around the rim, but this didn't deter me...
Ahh yes, infected corn...
Look at the size of those swollen kernels! (yay macro setting on my camera)...
This stuff tastes surprisingly good... It has onions, corn meal, green peppers, salt and water in it... tastes a bit like salty, slightly fermented hominy...
I've been fascinated by this stuff for a...

The following text is transcribed from an interview with Sonia Molina (carried out April 15th, 2007). Sonia’s two sisters and mother died in an arson fire at 180 Central Ave, Brooklyn, on the morning of June 14, 1974. The family pictures (and doll) were salvaged from the burnt apartment by her grandmother.
She later grew up (with my co-worker’s family) to be a Bushwick educator. Her story is a sad reminder of what was lost in the 1970's firestorm.
When it happened, I was nine, my older sister 10, and my younger sister 4 years old...That day we...
