Adrian Dec 6,2008.: I grew up in NDG in the 60's and 70's on Montclair between Fielding and Somerled.I remember Dave Valente and Terry Hindley from a great punk rock bar called the "Oxygen" in downtown Montreal on...... Rohinton Ghandhi: November 27th, 2008
To City Noise Editors,
I have recently begun writing articles for the Verdun Messenger's new English Corner segment. They cover Verdun's history and the people within it.
I thought your group...... Mitch Spector: Yep, it's indeed very much GONE. Made one final pass by this morning (November 5th) to check things out and it's not what I saw, but what I didn't see that caught my attention! It's...... EvilGentleman: Jennifer, you must be unfamiliar with this site to post comments such as you did above. If you browse CE's other articles, which you can do by clicking on his name just under the main...... Mitch: Pretty sad, it's quite literally a piece of Montreal being erased forever (I can't even visualize that part of downtown without that tiny 3 story building with the red "Bens" sign). I last passed by...... Paul: I live in downtown Toronto and I think our downtown is quite impressive, with the coloured lights on the Skydome and CN Tower it really enhances the night view and the Royal Bank Plaza glitters...... EvilGentleman: The areas bordering Verdun are pretty much the same, as well.
Pointe-Saint-Charles, east of Verdun, is historically Irish, and today is a mixed community where English is not a problem.
Ville-Emard, to the north of Verdun, has...... EvilGentleman: Wow! Just wow! Great post, TK.
As far as the "20/20 hindsight" inspections of other structures **after** the collapse goes, we have the same thing happening here.
After the overpass collapse that killed 5 people in September...... CE: Do the little people in the display move at all? There's a wonderful xmas window display in a downtown department store here in Montreal and it moves around and does all kinds of crazy...... EvilGentleman: My hometown is {Kahnawake}, across the {Mercier Bridge} from {Lasalle}. I have been living in {Dorval} for the last two years, and I have also lived in {Lachine} and {Verdun}. I am also very familiar...... EvilGentleman: I saw this post the day it was first posted, and had not looked back it till today. What a lot of comments about stolen bikes in the Toronto area! Incredible.
Reminds me of this guy...... EvilGentleman: The simple reality is, Americans are welcomed warmly by most Montrealers, and generally disliked but tolerated by the rest. And that dislike is often because they are getting mistaken for Torontonians, or other English-speaking Canadians.
Dislike...... EvilGentleman: The crosswalk countdowns look like the ones I have seen in the Lasalle borough of Montreal for the last 20 years. They're everywhere around here nowadays, but not downtown for some stupid reason. They really...... CE: Ah, the ETS residences, there always seem to be weird parties in that building. I was invited to the annual beach party in the court yard by some people at the bizarre student dep....... Tehoke: This picture seems to be taken about 5 blocks west of The Sun Life building, from an upper floor of what is now the Quality Inn on Crescent Street or More likely the building that...... CE: Weird, the {Gramz} tag has been popping up all over downtown Montreal lately. S/He must have moved.... EvilGentleman: The old name of the neighbourhood, Notre-Dame-de-Grace (Our Lady of Grace). It was also the name of the area from when it became an independent city in 1906, until it was swallowed up by Montreal...... EvilGentleman: Sirhcbre - Take the metro to Longueuil, walk south on Boulevard Lafayette (next to Autoroute 20) until you are almost under the Jacques-Cartier Bridge (it's not very far, look it up on Google Earth), and...... EvilGentleman: Ah yes, this was put up this summer on Pierce Street, a little residential lane that runs between Sainte-Catherine and de Maisonneuve a half block west of Guy Street. I turn down this lane on...... EvilGentleman: That picture was taken from the corner of Atwater and Sainte-Catherine, at the west end of downtown. The metro station is Atwater. Westmount is generally a lot more residential, but I wanted a picture of...... Sirhcbre: I would argue that NOISE is the JA of Montreal. That guy is everywhere! There might be a lot of Sake that I'm missing though since my only experiences with the city thus...... Chris Erb: The controversy is starting to pour in so here are my reasons for excluding some cities that I was considering:
**Ottawa:** For a city its size and importance, the skyline in't very impressive. The Parlement...... Jody: Chris, I'm curious to hear the reasoning behind your picks. Personally, I don't find anything below Montreal particularly impressive, and even Montreal is a bit disappointing since it lacks any distinctive focus. It's...... EvilGentleman: Chris - Sainte-Catherine near Lambert-Closse, except picture 4, which is down the street at the corner of St-Marc.
anon - I am for the most part still experimenting with shooting people in an urban setting. I...... Chris Erb: Nice set of pictures. At least you had some rain in Montreal to cool you off. We just had horrible humidity.
I'm assuming all these pictures are taken downtown. I do recognize some...... EvilGentleman: Possibly. But I remember seeing a white Cadillac convertible complete with chromed running boards and chrome and white spare tire covers (you know, for the 2 spares that sit above the running board between the...... EvilGentleman: The nearest Wendy's to the downtown West End is on Decarie near Queen Mary, so far as I know. It is located very close to the Snowdon Metro station, which is the western junction of...... EvilGentleman: elaine, the pink Scotiabank building is not home to Barbie, but I think that Squirrel that hangs out with Spongebob Squarepants might frequent the place fairly often.
Chris, I am a political science major who is...... Chris Erb: I didn't realize that the "box" is no longer in use as the actual arts building. I didn't notice the graffiti but I'll check for it next time I'm in the city (should be...... EvilGentleman: The first pic is on Rene Levesque Boulevard (Dorchester to **true** Montrealers) looking west past Place Ville Marie.
Second pic is Place Ville Marie, which was the tallest building in Montreal for 25 years starting in...... EvilGentleman: Ironically, I have seen taller buildings in Iqaluit, Nunavut.
And the buildings in Montreal were originally not allowed to be higher than Mount Royal (much like Halifax and the Citadel). Nowadays, the heights of the buildings...... Chris Erb: I'm now back from Montreal. I would have loved to go to NYC and Toronto but money/time wouldn't allow. I've never been to either city but I'm sure they're just as wonderful if...... EvilGentleman: To my way of thinking, graffiti should be both encouraged and it's location controlled within reason, with penalties for those who put graffiti in places where it has no business being. Now, before you all...... Get out of your car, buddy: "Vancouver is much better then Toronto, any day and night. You can't even compare the two."
Yep. Vancouver craps all over Toronto.
Where do comments like this come from? You know, there are 8 million...... EvilGentleman: I know what you mean about the grand old theaters, as I have watched them all disappear one by one. I remember watching numerous movies in the Capitol Theatre in Cornwall, Ontario. The Capitol has......
