Coney Island Deconstruction

author: luna park : Brooklyn, NY

after all i'd read about the end of coney island as we know it, i had to go for a look in person. it's an eerie, empty shell of it's former self - then again, that's what's been said about coney island for the last hundred years...

Oldest Subway Tunnel in the World

author: adam : Brooklyn, NY

The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is officially the world's oldest subway tunnel, built in 1844 by the cut-and-cover method under a City of Brooklyn Street. It is a half-mile long and accommodated two standard gauge tracks. The tunnel was built in only seven months, using only hand tools and primitive (by today's standards) equipment. It was built to provide grade separation for early Long Island Rail Road trains that lacked brakes good enough to operate on city streets, and to eliminate vehicular and pedestrian traffic conflicts and delays. This route allowed through trains to travel quickly between Brooklyn and Boston (via...

Till then, here are a few views from the recent snow for more info, check with the Brooklyn Historical Society, Center for the Urban Environment, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Former New York City Fire Patrol Houses

author: ntatap : New York, NY

A few years back I decided to go out and photograph the former locations of the New York Fire Patrol past and present. On 15 October 2006 the NY Fire Patrol was disbanded. At one point the Patrol had 7 companies and 3 Salvage Corp units. I was driven to work on this project as tribute to Keith Roma who was a member of the patrol who lost his life on September 11, 2001 during opperations at the World Trade Center. The Patrols primary duty during its existence was to protect property but when saving lives came into the picture...

A Proposition to Graffiti Writers

author: Repine Graffiti Magazine : London, UK

The ‘man on the street’ often sees graffiti as illegible or unreadable. He therefore assumes that the reasons for doing graffiti are equally indistinct and obscure and shows no respect for graff as an art form, or any other component of culture. This, I’m sure, is something that gets on the tits of many writers who believe that these ignorant individuals have no right to speak pejoratively about something they don’t understand. I reckon there are two ways in which we could conjure some respect from these people, the first will almost certainly lead to graff becoming ‘soft’ and without style,...
