Among the Cannons and Buses of Downtown Tehran

Posted in: Tehran, Iran by Reza. The central square of Tehran, Iran was built in 1867 as part of a process of urban reformation initiated under the monarch Nasreddin Shah Qajar. Called Meydan-e Toopkhaneh (Cannon House Square), the Square marked the northern extent of the old, walled city and the entrance to the modern, planned city to be built to the north. The Qajar palace was (and is still) located directly south of the square, while an old neighborhood alongside it was demolished and made into a city park, displacing the area's residents but giving Tehran's Europeanized elite a place to promenade. A block away, meanwhile, is the large garden that houses numerous government ministries (pictures here). Over time, the elite moved further north and although the government ministries stayed put the area lost its patrician feel, developing into an entertainment center (complete with an officially regulated red light district). A boarded up theatre ("Tehran Theatre) on Lalehzar-e No street, the heart of the old red light district. Over the years, Toopkhaneh lost much of its appeal; the building pictured was demolished to make way for a parking lot that serves as a bus and taxi station, while the streets extending out from the square have been widened. Imam Khomeini Square, as it is now called, is a maddening mess of traffic. Despite this, in the alleys that meander away from the Square and the grandiose schemes of shifting modernities and regulations, glimpses of beauty can still be found...

Having my camera out already, I had already obliged him before he even finished speaking. 505 Broadview via Dundas I really love all the rooftop graffiti in Toronto. Add a sunny day, good company and a few streetcars and I'm sold! 505 Dundas West via Dundas This is the streetcar that the guy in the first photo was driving. There were freight tracks under this overpass, filled with lots of good graf. 514 Spadina Toronto seemed to be much more cycle-friendly than here in NYC. More polite drivers, ubiquitous bike lanes, clear ordinances and tons of those iconic bike racks to lock-up to. Thank you Hool for letting me borrow your superfast bike! Queens West with a nice roller piece by Spud 501 Humber A nice blurry shot after a delicious dinner in Chinatown and a few Molson Canadians Another nice roller, this one by Trik 504 Dundas West via King 506 Coxwell & Queen ##501 Long Branch 510 Union Station I love trains and public transportation in general, but after seeing them pop up again and again on Citynoise for almost ten years now, it was nice to finally see them in person.
