Thirty years ago this month, the eyes of the nation focussed on a darkness. Across New York City, where gleaming towers defined the night sky, the lights went dark. It was three days until electricity was fully restored to the city. When the lights went out at 9:30PM on July 13th, looting soon broke out in the poorest areas of all five boroughs. (its still the only 5 borough disturbance in the city's history). The degree of looting varied widely, but it was at its worst in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where fires accompanied widespread looting.
