Previous Day :: Next Dayfec tfv: back in my days,, it was all ink.. you name it,, supermarket ink in al colors.. from 1980s to the 90s..i use to kill shit in the inside lines... in bklyn.. tfv4life.. wish if that shit came back.. i miss the old days..tfv, tbkings fec tfv: i miss those 1983 nyc trains in nyc,, use to love it when there were graffity all over ging to work.. wish if we could bring it back.. that was the good old days..tfv4life hool: thanks everyone. the girls in matching saris is from gerrard east, little india. from a few blocks away i saw them run out of a store, play on that concrete beam, then run back in. i was too far away to photograph them. so i sat... adam: nah.. i used to live in glen rock where i went to h.s. 93-97.. so we used to drive over the bridge (there are only 2 or 3 bridges that lead from bergen county to passaic county, go figure) to buy alcohol and explore the "ghetto".. fun/stupid times :) kc: the croods and the blips? what is the method, anyhow? Has the meaning of these symbols been decoded somewhere on this site? It does look witchy. Catherine Penfold-Waxman: I love the two little girls in matching colors. The saturation is splendid and sumptuous. And the one with the red brick nearly had me clawing my eyes out so that would be the last image I ever saw (that was actually meant to be a compliment, but it just... Peter: me too! way to go on that one, jamie ;) Peter: wander as far as you like. i say GO FOR IT :) ian: The random entry on the sidebar is my favorite citynoise feature. ian: Catherine,
Yeah, these are from my dad's archives. '78 was still 4 years before I was born :)
Peter,
I plan on posting alot, but I'm not sure how off-topic I should wander. Some of them are really people shots -- wonderful people shots -- but with no real 'city' or even habitation... Catherine Penfold-Waxman: I'd just like to point out that my weird out-of-context posting was in reply to someone ranting about graffiti being the work of satan, which has since been expunged.
My feeling is that graffiti is the very definition of what it is to be human, the desire to express yourself,... DSK1: thats the dumbest question i've ever heard, john. why do people do walk down the street? why do people do the breaking wind? why do people do the wearing of socks under their shoes? sometimes people just do stuff. what you should do is think about how dumb your question... john: why do poeple do graffiti
elaine: oh those friends. didn't know they were witches elaine: didn't know you were in a coven, i will be more polite in future! elaine: haha - yesterday i wore a white longsleeved t shirt with light coloured jeans, i felt verry 80s all day Peter: adam: are you from patterson? adam: oops.. didnt realize kc already posted pics of the falls :) adam: thanksthanks.. paterson is a well of photographic opportunities since the whole city used to be an industrial town and then everything shut down and the city turned to shit sometime in the 70s/80s.
for those of you who live nearby, you must check out the waterfalls. i wish i had... Catherine Penfold-Waxman: Oh God, I'm having an eighties moment. Any minute I'll break into a Howard Jones song (who, coincidentally, was the first concert I ever went to. Brighton 1984 with Strawberry Switchblade). NeXT &RaDe: look out for some more broward
Peter: its graffiti by our friends whom i cant name, lest they find this via google and flood in here and leave 50,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 pointless yammering comments, hehehehe. Anonymous (162.39.142.230): awesome photographs... awesome find. rade & next: keep miami sick elaine: yeah grreeeeeeeeen elaine: the razorwire looks like it is whirling round (like a record baby right round right round) elaine: ooooh is that witchy stuff theyer? Editor:: i will add a link to his site on the about page: www.citynoise.org/about.php
Catherine Penfold-Waxman: I can't get enough Mitch Waxman either. But for other reasons, I hope. I posted some more of his pics (his name is the link) called Northern Blvd. And there's plenty more where that came from. He's one hard-working artist www.weirdass.net and I can't say enough good things... Peter: yeah. everyone in the city carries some sort of shoulder bag or purse... too much stuff to lug around by hand, heh.
i wanted to give this series a break for a while... i just noticed that the lighting looks so different, seasonally, between august and november... elaine: and i do, third it! elaine: heh, i forgot about these. that one from 23 august looks bizarre, with the bright shirts and the shoulder bags, it looks like a weird uniform they all have on elaine: hey vz, i quoted you www.swinney.org/journals/article.phtml?id=3892
also currently hanging in the stephen lawrence gallery in greenwich Peter: elaine: i do, and i agree. Peter: yep, this is about as abject as they come.
there are a series of like 25 of these tree-less placques around my neighborhood in brooklyn. i keep meaning to get all of them captured in photos.
they deserve at least some sort of recognition, you know...? Jamie: fuzzytank, do you have a highres copy of this i could peek at? elaine: suitably abject photo :-( elaine: hee hee! Peter: hmm. "banal" sounded too, well, banal. elaine: rural lad! GGP: i really enjoyed the Thundercut website; thanks for that tip! Catherine Penfold-Waxman: Did you take these photo's, Ian? Or did I imagine it that you said they are by your Dad? My brain fills in information...or it could be the dirty martinis... Catherine Penfold-Waxman: I am so in love with these. I love the quality. I'm glad they have that "developed in the '70s" look about them. Freakin' cool. DSK1: thanks for speaking for all graf writers, "nope". thanks as well for alienating graffiti fans by saying trite yet ultimately meaningless things like "people are just afraid of what they dont understand".
i dont think anyone is actually afraid of graffiti. and i think plenty of people (here, and in other... nope..: real writers stay underground.. thats it. the fact is graff will never be legal. "people are just afraid of what they dont understand" sythero: wow......poor wall.... Jamie: especially when i'm cooking a hogroast on my gas-powered hog-spit Jamie: It seems that the Ministry for Ordering What Is Right and Forbidding What is Wrong have said "No!" Jamie: i have to say i was kinda shocked to see such a level of violence in Norway. I've always imagined scandinavia to be a much more placcid place, but these photos make Oslo look more akin to Liverpool Peter: i really like second one. the perspective shots looking up at buildings always catch my eye... Peter: it was a dark and stormy night... Peter: hmm, perhaps not. seems that google doesnt have very good zoomed info/images for china. imagine that. Peter: yeah i was wondering what was going on in the second photo, too. and that first one looks busy- with such a mishmash of architecture. nice!
i bet someone with too much time on their hands could find that place on maps.google.com heh. Peter: i agree with jeeff on the scribble horses. nice.
i always like the roadway shots too. they make me want to go on vacation. Peter: wow. decaying factories are always cool... i love the photo of that mannequin. tres creepy!
im glad you got into this place, and scored some photos to share with us! Peter: "...ive been around the world... from london to the bay..." Peter: is this the domino plant in williamsburg? Peter: the light in the 4th one is magical.
as always! Peter: yeah, this is some real, candid stuff. i like it. thanks. Peter: yeah, good stuff. i love the hydraulic elevated car-parks, too.
and yes, must second... more mitch waxman :) Peter: aardvark robots!

Jamie: i like it when you post a series of photos of the same place in one post. i like the way you tell a story with your photos. more more more Jamie: thanks? Jamie: i wonder what they are all looking at in the second photo. and i wonder wat they're doing now. Jamie: jeef i like that you can spell pterodactyls, so many people can't these days, and it's a crying shame. And i agree with you, they do look like pterodactyls, much more than they do parrots or flamingos. Are you mental elaine? What kind of flamingos have you been looking at?... Jamie: It'd be nice to see some of your photos of Oslo though Rune instead of stock news images. elaine: flamingos! Jamie: more mitch waxman i say jeffrey: KRASH 2282 Kon: Someone elp me out here, because I am a little confused. All the pet bird is done by one dude, right? Because of it is, holy shit he gets around. If it isn't, well then what the hell is the "pet bird" deal about. I have done a lot of... Unknown: This photo is part of a series: World Tour 1978 Erinslion: On May 27th, 2005 I set foot on Irish soil for the first time at Shannon airport in Ennis. A week later I wandered the streets of Derry from sundown until 4 in the morning. I saw the murals, visited the Bogside Inn and the Celtic, stood in... butter: freeeeeeking crazy wish they could flip like my ass.
