A Fire in Bushwick 1: May 25, 1974

author: upfromflames : Brooklyn, NY

Like most of the photos in the FDNY archive, this one was taken by an unknown FDNY photographer. The incident occurred at 650 Hart street. The building is now a vacant lot next to Engine 218 at Central Avenue Unlike most of the photos in the FDNY archive, this one is not about the flames or charred remains. Rather, it shows victims--just a few of the hundreds of thousands that lost their homes during the firestorm. I don't have any details on the fire, but if you do, please reply! Thanks again to Randy Barron at the FDNY photo...

The Secret Garden: Big City Walls

author: upfromflames : Brooklyn, NY

The Bushwick Linden Block Association Garden AKA, the Secret Garden, found a happy match with Big City Walls and the Younity Coalition, a female urban arts collective that works in communities across Brooklyn and NYC. But their best work (I think) is in Bushwick! www.bigcitywalls.com Alice, co-founder of Younity Madge K-Star: Bushwick girl who is still working to make it better! Mama, founder of Big City Walls. What we have here is clear: Strong women honouring a strong woman, Miss Avellar Hainsley, founder of the Secret Garden! Sorry I could not show everyone and everything in my photos—but the mural is there for everyone...

So if i can narrate a bit from Bushwick's fiery past, I can tell you what these firemen from ladder Ladder 112/Engine 271 (and other companies) are doing here. The fire fighter with the saw is about to cut a whole in the roof. Bushwick's older houses were such firetraps due to their common cocklofts, an "innovation" that circulated air with a...
