Outdoor chess players along Market Street in San Francisco. Several of the guys I played with who were either homeless or ex-cons claimed that all that free time had allowed them to master their strategies. Bets are almost always made for each game, so it turns into a lucrative hobby for those who are good enough. An unemployed day-laborer with the skills can easily make a decent day's pay from challenging tourists and passersby.

The Harbison Dairy, located at Coral & Abigail Streets in Kensington, closed in the early 1960's much like many of the factories in this part of the city. To this day the milk bottle water tower still remains a prominent landmark for this neighborhood. Several attempts have been made in recent years by community nonprofits to have the bottle repainted, but unfortunately the owner isn't too keen on the idea.  I visited Montreal for the first time last week. What a beautiful, clean, and friendly city! I'm eager to share pics since I know a handful of citynoise folks are from here. These pics are from Mile End, Ave. St. Viateur. I stayed in the Plateau but spent a few evenings up in this neck of the woods seeing various shows, eating bagels, etc.

 Some shots of Center City Philadelphia, my home and the city of brotherly love. While some patches of Philly remain deindustrialized and blighted, Center City and its surrounding neighborhoods are booming. Waves of gentrification are spreading out in all directions; many people like myself are working hard to ensure it's smart growth.
