 tokyo's avant-garde architecture tends to the monolithic, echoing the spirit of a city where things need to be big. here are some examples:
^ tokyo international forum (1996), in yurakucho. architect: rafael vinoly - also known as "the ark." one whole side of the ship-shaped building is an unbroken glass wall. all the criss-crossing walkways are open to the public. it would be a great place for a game of tag.

 i'd stare at the tokyo tower whenever it was in view. often it was obscured by the forest of skyscrapers, but you can see it looking south from the lawn of the imperial palace, near my work. in the daytime it's an insignificant blip on the horizon, but at night-time the glow is hypnotic. even from a distance you can sense the complexity of open metal latticework-- patterns within patterns within patterns. while i visited many times, i never went up.
the tower was erected in 1958, copying eiffel's design but adding an extra 13 meters...
