1946 Box of Ivory Snow

author: jack : Vista, CA

I remember that box of laundry soap in my grandmothers basement next to the old washing machine with the automatic wringer on top. there was no warning label to warn parents of keeping their children away from the revolving rollers, i guess in those days parents didn't need to be told everything. when i closed out the house in brooklyn a few years ago i saw that box and mailed it to my father, he keeps it next to his machine. the milk container is from a farm in ravena new york. i remember women in dresses and...

Summer Dreaming

author: jack : Coronado, CA

the beach in winter. how i long for the summer winds. my friend tom and i would go to jones beach or to fire island in the summer and we would bring along his little cousin and tom and i would set up the chairs and small table with the chess board on top, we kept the cooler of gin and tonic under the chair with the hero's from sheepshead bay. we would play chess all day, listening to frank sinatra sing the summer wind and at the end of the day we would walk by the...

ahhh! just came back from california, it was great, flowers, palm trees and walking around in a tee shirt, even though it was a bit chilly.

The End of the Brotherhood Winery Collection

author: jack : Washingtonville, NY

the winery was once used as a fallout shelter. many people became alcholics from running in there so many times to excape the atomic bomb and wound up getting bombed anyway. my fallout shelter was in my Catholic Parochial school from whence came my article about the meatball caper. a boy onced asked a nun what would happen if a bomb was dropped on us and i replied, "put your head all the way between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye" i don't know where i had heard that but the nun didn't think it was funny...

Underground Winery

author: jack : Washingtonville, NY

this is the original winery as it is today. next photos are underneath this building where there is a small museum. the cut out at the top is where they pulled out the wine barrels back in the 1800's. once the wine was in the building they would then bottle it and label it and then off to the distributors. it was pretty cold in there.

An Old Lush Stealing a Drink at the Brotherhood Winery

author: jack : Washingtonville, NY

i love this place. the firast time i went there with my wife was a day after we became engaged. then after 40 years i took my wife away for a weekend and we went to the winery. so my wife caught this old coot trying to get a free drink. the poor old lush had sniffed too much vino and needed a drink. its funny but i'm not a drinker but when i go to this place i enjoy the wine tasting and the crackers. the stinkin barrel was empty!

A House Is Not Necessarily Always a Home

author: jack : Great Swamp, NJ

i caught this shot as i was passing through the great swamp. the swamp is bordered by meyersville and harding township in morris county, new jersey. i first saw this house being built approx. in 1988 and it never sold. it was built on contaminated waste and asbestos and they were never able to sell it. the house still stands till today, getting shabbier and shabbier as each year passes. no family rooms, no laughter in its hallways, no bbq's no family party's, no children playing on swings, just barren land around a contaminated house....
