Existential Crisis at the Bus Station

author: Franny Wentzel : Schenectady, NY

image 51812
Was downtown a couple months ago and whilst taking pictures to update previous postings we came upon this little incident... An ambulance had shown up.. ...for reasons yet to be determined so we lingered to see what would happen. A man was brought out and planted on a bench. He was going through some crisis... ...that required his yelling and gesticulating to the audience of paramedics and fire fighters that had gathered around him. As our bus was about to depart, we were obliged to leave him to his existential angst...

Pretty Green House on a Block I Seldom Pass Through...

author: Franny Wentzel : Schenectady, NY

Cutting across town to save a bus ride, I came upon this pretty green house... The siding is vinyl over... ...what was probably a century old farm house ...from when this was still open country The fence is kinda neat too...

Schenectady's Civic Center - City Hall

author: Franny Wentzel : Schenectady, NY

image 51423
It would seem more an accident than design that Schenectady has something of a civic center... With the possible exception of the library and police headquarters none of these building were constructed with the idea of being part of a whole... Googlesat view of City Hall - our first stop on this tour... Was constructed just as the Great Depression was getting under way. Political detracters called it the 'Million Dollar Place. View from the Jay Street side. Rear view from Clinton Street which like Jay was widened...

Schenectady's Civic Center - The Post Office

author: Franny Wentzel : Schenectady, NY

image 51408
The first of three civic buildings lining Liberty Street... ...was actually constructed before our City Hall. The Post Office. Was constructed in two sections The first, fronting Liberty Street, was constructed in 1911. In 1934 the entrance was moved to Jay Street... With this dramatic new addition. The view from the Clinton Street side is a bit more mundane, but at the time of construction this street wasn't here. ...

Schenectady's Civic Center - The County Library

author: Franny Wentzel : Schenectady, NY

image 51387
Constructed around the same time as The Police Headquarters the County Library presents a softer side of mid-late 1960s architecture... The Googlesat view. White part is a new addition... View of entrance from across Liberty Street. Auditorium wing. Just the right size for lectures, book sales, blood drives... Classical tradition was edging its way back into architectural acceptability.... The new addition... Not sure what it's for... ...

Schenectady's Civic Center - Police Department Headquarters

author: Franny Wentzel : Schenectady, NY

image 51370
The mid-late 1960s must've been an unironic time for to be seen as appropriate for a small city's police department to choose as the architecture for their headquarters... Googlesat view - the light gray cube with the diagonal slash is the city court. 'T'- shape houses the 'guests'. Shape where the stairs cut in is the administrative office section. View from Liberty Street - no ironies there... The public entrance. 'Guests of the city' are escorted in from the rear... Not sure why the flag...

Vintage Views of Dealey Plaza

author: Franny Wentzel : Dallas, Texas

On the 50th anniversary of the death of president John F. Kennedy, it is interesting to note that more time has passed between then and now then had passed between then and the assassination that set off World War One. Yet it still remains fresh in the minds even of those unborn at the time... George Bannerman Dealey (18591946) was a Dallas businessman and the long-time publisher of The Dallas Morning News. He used his influence to accomplish many goals but will always be remembered primarily for one of them. He crusaded for the...
