Octopussing

author: EvilGentleman : Montreal, QC

I committed my first drive-by octopussing last week. It took a while to form the complex plan in my head, but once I did, I became driven to follow it through to its grim conclusion. My wife seemed to be aware that something was up, but she patiently waited for me to return to normal. We drove around in search of a victim for a while. Due to the time being just before midnight, the residential sections of Lachine did not net any suitable victims, so I continued to search for prey in the back roads of Dorval. Finally, after 40 minutes...

Things I Love About... Living in the City

author: EvilGentleman : Montreal, QC

Most of my childhood was spent moving from one Canadian Air Force base to the next, with frequent visits to see my grandmother in my hometown of , located across the river from . Almost every air base I lived on was located in a rural part of the country, so I always looked forward to going home for a visit, since there were so many wonderful things to experience in the city. I think most of us here on citynoise have things we love about the urban world, so why not put together a page where we can share...

Montreal Goes Non-Smoking: Good or Bad?

author: EvilGentleman : Montreal, QC

At midnight on May 31, it is supposed to become illegal to smoke indoors in any environment in Quebec where people are working. This includes bars, restaurants, garages and even tobacco factories. Anti-smoking groups and insurance companies are hailing this occasion as a major step in bringing Quebec in line with the standards in the rest of North America. No longer will employers have to deal with cigarette smoke as a health hazard in the workplace. ...or will they? As good and noble as the intention of such legislation may be, Quebec still has one of the highest percentages of smokers in North...

Lake Ontario Ducks

The same morning we saw the sun rise in Tyendinaga, we wound up in , where I started shooting the Penitentiary and Kingston's old Yonge Street. While taking the shots of the Penitentiary from across , I saw these in a small park at the edge of Lake Ontario. They did not seem to be at all afraid of people, so I was able to get quite close to them. Neck? What neck? I don't need no steenking neck! "C'mon baby, shake your tail feathers." Step by step... This Google Earth map shows the location of the different stuff I shot in...

The Other Yonge Street

Once the capital of Canada and a major center of shipbuilding, the hometown of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald is better known today as the home of Don Cherry (I'm not a fan of his, but I know where he's from) and Kingston Penitentiary. Some of the older parts of town have a colonial charm to them, like Yonge street, on the west side of Olympic Harbour. Check out the anchor in front of the Portsmouth Tavern. I dunno if anyone was looking for Peter's Drugs, but here you go. I hear stone houses are naturally cool in summer, warm...

Bay of Quinte Sunrise

My best friend Mike and I decided to go fishing in Tyendinaga one night last month. Or rather, Mike decided to go fishing, and I went along as the driver, since we had not had a road trip in ages. He fished all night while I slept in the car, and in the morning, we were treated to an awesome sunrise over the Bay of Quinte, which is an arm of Lake Ontario. These first two shots are of the area where Mike was fishing. Yes, they are actually different photos. Another shot from the fishing area. I love the texture of old...

Monster Trucks

A couple of weekends ago, I wound up going to a show for the very first time. I had always considered such things to be the refuge of the redneck, so I had never gone before, but this was a group activity I was invited to with free tickets, and the family was interested, so off we went, to the . As the pre-show gets underway, the are parked along the wall of the stadium getting ready. Also note the jet-car (that was what it was called, although it looks like a bike to me). The jet-car...
