Westmount
Population - 20,003
Although a few other parts of Montreal Island now have higher per capita incomes, none carries the connotation of wealth and old money that Westmount does to Montrealers. The Beverly Hills of the Montreal region, Westmount is right where its name would lead you to believe: on the west side of Mount Royal, with old stone mansions nestled on the back streets at the higher levels of the city.

Baie d'Urfe
Population - 3800
Baie d'Urfe is a quiet residential community located west of Beaconsfield. The population is quite affluent, especially along the lakeshore, where many magnificent estates can be found.
Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue
Population - 5062
Located at the western end of Montreal Island, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue (Sainte Anne's to the locals) has been an important crossroads in Canada's early river-based transportation for over 300 years. The town is a popular tourist destination, due to the waterfront shops and the locks that permit pleasure craft to enter the Ottawa River from the Saint Lawrence. The locks are a National Historic...

I have been thinking for a while about how each city, or formerly independent city in the Montreal area seems to have different styles of street signs and border signs. So here is the first part of a new series on Montreal Signs.
Dorval
2006 population - 18,311
My current home, as well as the location of Trudeau International Airport, Dorval is a peaceful little city on the north shore of Lac Saint Louis (a wide part of the Saint Lawrence River). The population is primarily middle-class, with a poorer area around Dorval Avenue and a wealthier area along the lakeshore.
**Dorval Island (Īle...

This tree on Lakeshore Road in Pointe Claire seems a tad over-pruned.
By the way, for those who wonder why I label this as being Montreal, I have found it simplest to just label everything that was ever once part of the city of Montreal as being in Montreal, and then give the name of the suburb or relevant borough in the text of the post. This is because I have a lot of pictures that cover the period before 2002, when there were 28 municipalities in the Montreal Urban Community (including Montreal), the period between 2002 and 2006, when all...

I was looking out my window at the highway when suddenly, everything turned white. Since Montreal does not get snow in August, I took a closer look. A cloud of white smoke was moving down the highway, the smoke totally blocking all vision to the drivers on the road, and even making it pretty foggy on my patio. I jumped in my car to find the source of the smoke.
A block down, I could see a garbage truck pulled over on the side of the highway, smoke slowly ceasing to come from under its hood. I pulled over at the...
