We kicked off summer with a scream in Montreal this year. The first annual Heavy MTL festival was held at Montreal's Parc Jean Drapeau this weekend. There were 22 different heavy metal bands playing in an open-air setting over the weekend, Staurday, June 21, and Sunday June 22. Parc Jean Drapeau is located on St. Helen's Island, the location of Expo 67 and the 1976 Olympics. While talking to people in Cabot Square across from the old Montreal Forum on a recent afternoon, I wound up talking to Sammy, a fellow who just recently arrived in the area from Ottawa. I found this buff in progress at the McDonald's in the Montreal suburb of Dorval, while sitting in the parking lot munching on my breakfast. The wooden wall around their garbage dumpster had gotten tagged recently. First, the pressure washer was used to remove the graffiti. Hockey Victory Riot

Montreal has an odd little tradition of rioting after major victories during the NHL playoffs. Usually it is after winning the Stanley Cup, but this time, the riots began after the first round of playoffs. Thousands of jubilant fans poured out of the Bell Centre and began celebrating in the streets after the Montreal Canadiens defeated their arch-rivals the Boston Bruins 5-0 in game 7 of the conference quarter-finals. Ben's Deli

Sometimes, landmarks do not survive. This is the unfortunate case with Ben's Deli, one of Montreal's best-known and beloved smoked meat deli restaurants. Founded in 1908, Ben's was a Montreal institution that generated so much devotion from their clientele, that many previous attempts to buy the building and tear it down, in order to develop the extremely valuable downtown real estate it sits on, were met with protests and outrage.
