Palacio Nacional Da Pena

Forty-five minutes west of Lisbon lies Sintra; a UNESCO world heritage site for it's concentration of absurdly whimsical 19th century romantic architecture. The Palacio da Pena, completed in 1854, is Sintra's (and one of the world's) most flamboyant Romantic works. One of Lisbon's most enchanting aspects (and it has many!) are its lovely streetcars, which have been rattling through it's windy hills since the 19th century. The originals--imported from the US, and called, appropriately, "americanos"--are now protected in Lisbon's Public Transport Museum; however, those still in use retain a very distinctive old-world charm.
