from national historic register:
New York's first bridges were engineering marvels, but little thought was given to entrances and exits, instead focusing primarily on the river crossing. That changed with the evolution of the City Beautiful movement, and one of its crowning accomplishments was the Manhattan Bridge plaza, completed in 1916, seven years after the Manhattan Bridge itself, and designed by the architect team Carrère & Hastings, best known for their 1898 New York Public Library.
Over one thousand families were evicted to accomodate the plaza on a rectangle 400'x750' bounded by the Bowery, Canal, Bayard and Forsyth Streets. The plaza...

One of the greatest of the bridges of New York City, connecting Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx over Randall's/Ward's Island
Built by Robert Moses in 1937, it was the first bridge designed for motorcars.
But Pedestrians were also an integral aspect of this bridge's design.
You really feel that on two wheels.
But the ramp is like a prize for getting over to Randall's Island!
Do it soon! Riding weather is here!

Looking westward from Halletts Cove, just south of Astoria section of Queens, NY, across from the Lighthouse at the north end of Roosevelt Island
Or, as I tried to imagine, the old dock back home...
full disclosure: There never was an old dock back home.

from Randall's Island to the Bronx across Bronx Kill, it may be the shortest inter-borough Bridge in NYC.
Yes, unlike the other bridges of New York City. But its still a bridge, right?

Hell gate is the back door to the city, leading in from Long Island Sound into the East River. It is spanned by the Triborough and Hellgate Bridges. It is most probably named for its tumultuous tides...
##"The confluence of Long Island Sound/The East River & The Harlem River at Randalls Island has long been a incredibly turbulent waterway when the tides are running. While easy to navigate at slack tides, even for people in Kayaks, currents up to 5-10 knots are not unusual when the tide floods back in from New York Harbor & The Atlantic or when the tide...
