Musical Saws

On July 18, 2009 I was very pleased to be at Trinity Lutheran Church in Astoria to witness 53 people smash Guinness World Record of the “Largest Musical Saw Ensemble.”

The musicians are usually self-trained as it appears to be a matter of bashing away at the saw until the dogs stop howling. When mastered, the saw offers wonderful, etherial music that makes you feel like you've gone completely toilet brush. And when you hear it all in a beautiful church....simply amazing.

Wikipedia has a nice article at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_saw

I loved the poster outside. I think it captures it well.

This one is a musical saw. "Standard wood-cutting saws are often used by professional sawyers, although special musical saws are also made. The blades of these musical saws are generally wider (for range) and longer (for finer control), do not have set or sharpened teeth, and may have grain running parallel to the back edge of the saw, instead of parallel to the teeth."

i tried playing a saw this past weekend. believe me when i tell you that it is NOT easy :-0

Michelle: 19th Aug 2009 - 08:56 GMT

It might be easyto make noise with a saw, but to play well - not easy at all. Check out the videos on the festival's page: http://www.MusicalSawFestival.org/videos
There's also mp3 downloads on the side bar.

They did have electric saws, but quite like that one! It was a fantastic concert, totally wild. One woman did a mind-blowing version of Michael Jackson's "Beat it". I will be there next year, and I'll get there early for a good seat.

Ripleys Believe it or Not once did a cartoon claiming that Marlene Dietrich played the saw...

She did! And I saw two German ladies doing a tribute version of 'Lili Marleen.' Brilliant.

jack: 22nd Aug 2009 - 02:15 GMT

there was a bar called the lili marleen in worms germany and they had a saw fight there and there was blood and body parts all over the place.
