Toronto Without the Tower
[previous] :: [next]In respnse to this previous post I dug out some old images of that skyline you'll get onto (if you live there for a while). Most of these are pretty old so they don't have the CN Tower in them. How old? Older that bagged milk... but not older than The Beer Store...
Older than the New Toronto City Hall...
Older than the Skydome... or Exhibition Stadium or the Blue Jays for that matter...
Older than the extra wing on the Royal York Hotel
Which can be seen in this shot...
So old the tallest building in all of Canada was the lovely Bank of Commerce...
...which was the model for my city's tallest building...
and could be seen from the Great Lakes ore boats that used to dock at the foot of Yonge Street...
So old the Toronto Dominion Bank complex had yet to be built...
Well not in this one... Admiral TVs... the Montgomery Ward house brand in the 90s...
Or this one... there goes everyone's TV reception...
Or this one... Miesian perfection there, eh?
This one is at least as old as I am... but no giant TV antennae with an observation deck in the shot...
Couldn't do this post without at least one with the CN Tower poking into the shot... This article has been viewed 4329 times in the last 9 months
Franny Wentzel: 5th Aug 2009 - 23:10 GMTNeedless to say I wish could've spent some time in the pre-giant glass box Toronto... dglenn: 14th Aug 2009 - 16:43 GMTGreat post! Franny Wentzel: 14th Aug 2009 - 17:42 GMTAbout the same as my connection to Brasilia or Sao Paulo or Montreal... I have a bunch of old pictures of those cities... grange: 17th Aug 2009 - 15:47 GMTYou know , If the rails where cleaned up the water front looked pretty good before all the big buildings in the old days ...very nice Franny Wentzel: 17th Aug 2009 - 18:44 GMTTo think... with a little better planning Toronto could've had its own version of Chicago's Grant Park... JWT: 24th Aug 2009 - 06:21 GMTThanks for the vintage photos. I watched them build the CN Tower. It seems like yesterday. POWcityblog: 24th Aug 2009 - 15:54 GMTThey went and got rid of all that cool stuff! Railyards, oil tankers, right downtown. Now there's just a load of stupid corporate and tourist crap in its place. Stupid CN Tower. Stupid convention centre. Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
