She was a scuffy survivor on this once leafy block... having survived the loss of a major limb in a thunderstorm a few years back...

Along with the unkempts hedges she gave our home a shady intimacy... who cares that it caught all the litter blown down from the business district up the block?

Aside from the tree next to the bank across the street she was the last...

Then last week as I was coming home the store I notice a work crew had gathered around the bank's tree so I went to get the camera... coming back I found that this was happening...

Couldn't make out what they were saying but in retrospect I imagine they were saying to our tree 'viddy thee well my leafy brother, viddy thee well' because...

They were soon gathered around our tree!

Just what do you think you're doing Davey?

Say hello to my little friend!

You'd think we were in Fargo...

To what I thought was my relief they merely pruned a few limbs and moved on to other trees on the block. Little did I know that they were merely lulling our tree into a false sense of seecurity. Four days later...

Didja miss me sweetie?

Bit by bit they buzzed away at the grand old lady...

Tossing her limbs to the ground like they were in a Civil War field hospital...

...feeding them to the Moloch Machine as they went along.

Till she was a stumpy shadow of herself...

The next day they finished the job...

and piled her bones onto the truck...

And brought out this infernal contraption to 'deal with' the rest...

but they were still not done with her...

They were so determined to obliterate every sign of her existence they dug up the very sidewalk that sheltered her roots...
