New York City in the 1970s

The twins as seen from Brooklyn. By the 1970s shipping traffic had moved to the container port at Newark yet there was still general cargo going out and coming in. Somebody's getting some new Chevy pickups...
The twins from Jersey City. Battery Park City was still in the planning stage as was the Trade Center's Vista Hotel...
View of the twins from the Empire State Building...
View of midtown and the Empire State Building
Midtown over the Grand Central Terminal. Pan Am still owned their building.
Fifth Avenue from 59th Street
Forty-second Street
Penn Station and Madison Square Garden...
Newly constructed Citicorp Center. Picture likely taken before emergency structural repairs were undertaken...

Sixy Girls of the 1970s!
Times Square area... cheesy Kung-fu movies were all the rage back in the day...
Sixy Macy's Thanksgiving parade majorettes!
Then as now clowns = nightmare fuel
Smokey the Bear and Underdog
Black Elvis fire eater FTW!
Back in the 70s they were seriously concerned we were entering a new ice age...
...and New Yorkers just took the weather in their stride.
America celebrated their 200th birthday in 1976. This fellow looks to have been around for the 100th...
I'm a sucker for metapictures...
The Me Decade saw a rise of interest in personal fitness. Amongst other pursuits, cycling and jogging were just coming into style...
But loafing about on your lunch hour has never been out of fashion...
...nor have kids enjoying themselves in the park.
Speaking of fashion...
They take their religion oldskool...
Scenes from Little Italy...
We headed down in Chinatown... and showed 'em how to kick the gong around...
Harlem where it goes to show... no matter what color kids will always enjoy a freezie-pop...
Time to head home Minnie... This article has been viewed 6079 times in the last 10 months ntatap: 25th Jul 2009 - 02:36 GMTThis is an great group of photos. I remember as a little kid, going into the city from the Bronx with my parents and seeing all this stuff. It brought back some nice memories. Did you take these? Franny Wentzel: 25th Jul 2009 - 02:43 GMTI was just an egg in the bullpen when these were taken... images scanned from a 1970s picture book of the city. CartLegger: 25th Jul 2009 - 11:18 GMTThese are truly retroriffic, Franny. As a fellow bun in the oven during this period, i am overjoyed about being able to see the city at a (surprisingly cheery) lowpoint. i mean, the city was broke, crime furthering its crawl, racial tensions high, and neighborhoods were burning and people leaving en masse--over a million over the course of the decade. But all that historical perspective aside, people are smiling, going about their little lives as if its the best time in the world. Maybe people just smiled for the photos... What is the name of this book, and publisher? Could we get an MLA style citation? ;)
Franny Wentzel: 25th Jul 2009 - 11:53 GMTThese were taken from at least three separate books. Most images came from "New York - Beautiful Cities Series" authored by Kitty Grime for Crescent Books. Edition was copyrighted 1987 but clearly never updated since the late 70s. Another Crescent edition on New York provided the picture of Citicorp Center and 42nd St but I only had random pages from it and cannot provide citations. Madison Square Garden image taken from 1978 Chartwell Books' "The World Series - New York". Also have a Dover Books edition calls New York in Aerial Views that has aerial photos from the 40s to the late 70s. Might eventually scan more images for a 'part two' posting but I'll give you a li'l taste with this shot of Co-op City in the mid to late-70s
Liz: 6th Aug 2009 - 05:00 GMTGreat memories, amazing pics. I was born in 1970, and this was like looking through an old photo album of my childhood. Thanks!!!
