The present structure was erected in 1960, replacing the original shrine. It is built of white cedar, ash, redwood, and cypress, and uses pins instead of nails. The shrine is situated in a tranquil grove of white pines (sho-rin). In Japanese gardens, pines symbolize longevity. Peter: 25th Apr 2005 - 14:01 GMTwow... that place looks so different in 1915... actually, it looks exactly the same, but with much less density in the trees. i love archival photos of familiar places... nando: 25th Apr 2005 - 16:13 GMTwow sine what a lovely posting you sure have some good stuff on here i love the photos of that garden Anonymous (cpe-69-203-110-105.nyc.res.rr.com): 25th Apr 2005 - 18:42 GMTI can't wait to go to Sakura Matsuri next week!! ^_^ motembo: 25th Apr 2005 - 19:26 GMTAre those cherry blossoms? I'll have to try and make a trip out there to see them, however, seeing as my finals are coming up next week, I'm not sure I'll be able to get out there. So beautiful though. sine: 27th Apr 2005 - 07:00 GMTkobe: no, it's brooklyn! but i guess that is part of new york city, technically. brooklyn is amazingly beautiful.
