Combined Sewer Overflows are an ugly fact of life in NYC's outdated sewage system, which spill raw sewage into the water in event of a moderate rain (more than 5 minutes)

460 of these outfall pipes dot our city's shoreline and affect the health (and smell) of our water. Investments and improvements in this system are being made by the NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection, but they still collectively dump an estimated 27 Billions Gallons of RAW SEWAGE into "the water"

"The water" means your water: maybe that's Long Island Sound, the East River, or Jamaica Bay--we all have a shoreline that is special to us. These little green signs are a part of those shoreline, so lets recognize them as such.

There are too many CSO's in NYC for me to capture them all. So lets do this together. On your journey's around the city, I ask that you capture images of these green signs, with the most appropriate backdrop available. Then just Geotag them, and if possible, note the number of them--that corresponds to the sewage plant they flow from.

These photos will be compiled, and used for educational and advocacy purposes beyond Flickr.

So do a service for the city, and snap a CSO today.

What is the point of indexing each and every CSO? Especially if they already privately indexed by the DEP. How detailed map will affect the society, politics? People who do not know about CSO issue will not pay attention to the eye-pleasing landscape obstructed with "some industrial sign".

I propose geotagging simpler footages that will catch the eye of ordinary person. For example CSO discharge in progress, illegal dump on the street, clogged catch basin, oil and dead fish, bras on the water at least ;-)

Disclaimer: I do not oppose the CSO geotagging conceptually, but I am trying to challenge the idea so it will form the clear goal, plan and hypothesis of why it would work. Let us discuss it!

Well, I'd rather do than discuss at this point.
But to explain...
1) Landscapes are a soft point in my own heart, and this is a telling consistency (a la "The Red Couch". We live in huge city, and CSO's cover the entire geographic range. Thats what makes it a great mapping project.

Seondarily, its the process of taking photos of CSO's. Its not that easy to photograph them--, but I invite you to try today! If you do, you will find that you may see your city in a whole new light. If in doing so, you happen to see something else, like the sickly image below I took on the Gowanus--by all means post it! That takes in illegal dumping, unlicensed outfalls as well. Whatever it takes, get busy, get out, and get snapping!
