The Zimmerman Slaughterhouse and Meat Packing Building, located at 4th & Fairmount in Northern Liberties, has several terra-cotta steer heads adorning the top of it. At the time that it opened in 1911, the Zimmerman ranches were bringing over 40,000 cattle to market each year. Think Upton Sinclar's "The Jungle". Several years ago it was converted to condos.

Yeah, and the condo owners will be scared by the cattle ghosts mooing in the dark ;-) Nice heritage for the residential building.

i was gonna say! cool photo of an interesting place, but youre never gonna find me living in a former slaughterhouse, hahaha...

are they "nice" condos?

I live there - starting today.
The cow steer heads looked fantastic - I had never seen that before. I'd seen gargoyles, chimeras, lionheads etc but never this.
Right after I signed the lease I asked the agent about the history of the building and then it all fell together and my life apart. lol

It doesnt help that the bedroom in the basement has no windows.
There are door hinges all over the loft and metal hooks on the ceiling.

Besides that the place is great. The loft is huge and everything is new.
The terra cotta steer heads will look great with blood effect on Halloween.

Very neat piece!!!The lighting is peitoc. The camera work is thoughtful. The music is well chosen. The voice over is to the point. The editing is smooth and clean. The Ken Burns effect helps to add on to the story and makes it more touching and vivid.
