Mount Loretto Is a Very Unique Area
[previous] :: [next]
As you can judge by a simple google search, Mount Loretto has something for most anyone looking for something special in the city.
Its not just a romantic sea view
there are --amazing birds, plants, trees, sea life (seals and horseshoe crabs and sea shells), and lots and lots of sweet round rocks!
These rocks have helped the area achieve a quiet fame as a democratic art space.
Ah, putting rocks on rocks! I am not sure how many people have engaged in this activity...
but i could not help getting in on the fun!
The state park was formerly the site of an orphanage established in 1871 to help (mostly Irish) street urchins find a better life outside of the cruel city
photos from www.miv-mountloretto.org/aboutus.html leaving a huge empty green space, which is thankfully still unfilled by development!
the ruined buildings and their contents are in their last stages of slowly falling into the sea.
Thank you to New York State for saving this area. And need I encourage you to take a ride down there one sunny day? Its just off the Staten Island RR! Not much else to say, excellent job!:-) Peter: 8th May 2009 - 02:39 GMTi liked it from the stacked rocks to the "the end" asses. nicely done!
Mime: 9th May 2009 - 02:04 GMTI love stacking rocks. Outside the building where I have most of my Uni classes we have a man-made drain that has been filled with volcanic rock and little pebbles. Occasionally I pick up little pebbles and try to make arches with their own keystones. Arches are much harder than just stacking one rock on the other. It takes patience and steady hands.
